Resound11 Prompt 08: Catch Phrase

What’s your trademark phrase? Not sure? How about a quote or saying that you repeat often? Bonus points if it’s new for 2011, but we won’t be upset if it’s been around longer than that. Try to put it in context for us if it’s a little abstract

How will you resound? Follow along here.

This is easy: Bless.

Or blessings, or bless his heart or praise be. Tongue in cheek, of course. I think most ridiculous situations or people in life can benefit from a good, old-fashioned, southern, bless. You know when you’re talking about someone and their crazy antics with another person and you really want to say “have they lost their ever loving mind!??! what in the hell were they thinking?!!?” but instead, I find that all I ever really need to say is “bless their heart” and the other person gets it. It also acknowledges the fact that we all screw up and sometimes we just need the blessings and forgiveness of others to move on.

Making December Count

I have already started to see the emails and blogs posts and even new stories about New Years Resolutions for next year. Very sad, we live for today and already supposed to look at a month or 13 from now?

Anyway, by my watch there are still a few weeks left in the year, actually 24 days if we start from tomorrow. Plenty of time yet to finish the year with a bang.

Making December Count

Making December Count

So this is my plan and I hope you try it out too. I know that it is easier to succeed if there is a finite time than a huge time limit, so maybe this is our time to jumpstart before the new year even gets here.

Here is the plan for Making December Count

1. Look over your goals from the beginning of the year or try to remember back if you did not write them down. Are they relevant? Did you achieve any of them?

I like to start with this look back because in 11 months lots may have changed in your life.

2. So where are you now? Is there anything that has bee gnawing at you that you have been not quite finishing? Have you resigned yourself to waiting until the end of the year before you start anything?

3. So if you look at those first two questions and are really honest with yourself then your head and your heart should be in a great place to move forward. Your head may be saying “Wait, next year is almost here” and your heart may be saying “Lets simplify and get some of these old things out of the way”

Whenever you can get your feelings and emotions as well as your tactics in place you can achieve anything. If you don’t have these aligned then you will find you spin your wheels.

Since we are just going to try to drive some results out of the next 24 days I want you to looks at a couple things that are important. Maybe, like in my case improve my health, and organize my home and work life. You will notice that these are not real goals. Who gives a crap about real goals when we only have December to worry about anyway. So we are just going to pick off issues one at a time.

4. Make a list  all the things that you want to do in these two areas of your life and just to help you out I want to suggest that you break the things down into chunks that you can get done in a day or during a day. Here are my examples:

Improve my health – Do cardio, eat less refined foods, do weights, cut down on coffee, increase food intake, get better quality sleep.

Organize my home and worklife – Get critical tasks done before noon, spend two hours an evening with the computer off, read with the kids, take my wife out for lunch, Get the day planned the night before.

Again these are just directions, not the goals that I will be hammering on in a few weeks time but the goal of all this is to make some change in your life and to institute change.

5. Get these lists on a piece of paper that you can carry with your or tape up or even put on your fridge put this list in front of you. The idea behind this is that while you are working on structuring your day better today with one thing on the list you can also see the other parts in your life to work on in the rest of the list.

If this process seems tough then you are doing it all wrong. For all the tough parts of making changes in your life there should be at least a balance off of satisfaction and a better quality to your days.

Let me know how this works out for you. I have just started this December adjustment in protest to setting resolutions and giving up on 2011 and we can refine it as we move forward over the next few weeks before starting goal setting in earnest for 2012.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

If you suffer from constant panic attacks you should try to learn deep breathing techniques. In most cases when a person has a panic attack they start breathing rapidly, heavily and fast. This is not a good thing because it causes the heart to elevate. This type of breathing also causes a person’s muscles to tighten and can even make the person feel lightheaded. It simply can make a person feel like they are dying.

If you are experiencing these attacks you have to learn how to control your breathing by taking slow, deep breathes and to focus on just that, your breathing. This is a very important task that must be done if you want to control your panic attacks.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

If you suffer from panic attacks you should also learn how to use Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). You can learn this by realizing when your muscles are getting tensed up, which can be a warning sign that a panic attack is going to occur. Once you start to notice the signs that you are becoming completely stressed and your muscles are becoming extremely tensed up, then you must learn how to decrease the tension.

There are many self-help books that you can find online or in your local library that can also help you understand PMR better. You can also find help with this on many places online, as well.

There are a lot of different self-help for panic attacks methods that you can learn how to control your panic attacks. All it takes is a little bit of your time and patience to learn how you can effectively handle your attacks all by yourself without having to take medication.

Blogging, Spinach and Discovery

I’m embarking on a new journey of self-discovery.  I know this because my thoughts and wants are more clear, yet I’m having a hard time articulating it.

I’ve been asking myself lately: why do I blog? why will I continue to blog? what can i share? what will i get out of it?

This has been the longest project of my life. I started not knowing where I would arrive and five years later I’m still not sure. The only thing that I keep coming back to is to inspire. I don’t even know what that means, but I share because I know I’m not alone. I share because I may say something that might help someone else. I know it’s a big thing to believe about myself, but at the end of the day, I write because my words inspire me. I’m able to see who I am through my writing.

I don’t plan my posts. Which I’ve heard is a blogger mistake. But, I write what I feel, and along this journey I’ve gotten lost in that desire. I’ve seen other bloggers doing things that I wish I could do. I’ve seen them count, track, photograph and document every inch of their lives. I’ve wanted so bad to be other bloggers, that at times, I’ve forgotten who I am and why I’m here.

So there’s a lesson in that. To follow who you are, to follow your gut and not to punish yourself for not being like everyone else.  Because the world needs more people becoming and embracing who they are. There is someone, if not just myself, who needs me to be here just as I am. Saying what I need to say. And so in this realization, I want to continue to share whats important to me, regardless of the content. At the heart of this blog, I’m trying to live a healthier life. But, for me, this is not an isolated action. Being healthy is not just important for my body, it’s important for my relationships, my career and my belief in who I am. My life is about making things happen.

When I eat too much, I get depressed and my work suffers. When I eat well, I am productive and clear.

In all of this, I want to blog more about my process and my journey, regardless of what that looks like.  My journey isn’t just about following blogging tips and tricks, it’s about sharing where I’m headed. Where I want to be and what I know to be true.

So here’s the thing. I’ve completely stopped dieting. A concept I’ve tried before and got too scared. And I want to share this, but sometimes it doesn’t look like it should. It’s not ideal, but, it’s wonderful and eye opening. I’ve been “un-dieting” for several weeks now. I’ve purchased “taboo” foods at the store. Food that is just sugar and comes in wrappers. I’ve openly eaten what I desire in public, in front of my husband and for the world to see. I’ve stopped hiding food. I’ve stopped feeling guilt over food, mentally calculating calories, tracking, and measuring. Punishing myself for not making ideal choices. I’m trusting myself around food. I’ve never trusted myself around food. I’m celebrating that I can live with triggers in my life. That I can have candy in the house and not eat it for breakfast.

I’ve been actively stripping away all guilt around food. Removing the notion of good food or bad food and just being. I’m bridging the gap between unhealthy lorrie and healthy lorrie: they are the same. My choices are not isolated.  Healthy lorrie is just as present and open and ready as binge-eating lorrie. Healthy lorrie  is not a future goal she is who I am, all the time, every single day. Unhealthy, binge eating lorrie has her place too. I wish I knew how to articulate it, but I’ve become okay with the outcome. I’m trusting that I will get there, if I’m open. There have been days when I’ve done exactly what I feared: I ate too much. I turned to food when I stopped trusting myself. But, I embraced the action, and realized it was a choice. I am owning it.

Before, I treated these actions as though they were not a part of me. Habits are choices that I make everyday. It’s a big deal, to trust that I can stop. That eventually I will stop on my own and make another choice. I am making better decisions on my own because they are not future parts of my life. They are now. They reflect what I want and where I’m headed.

Un-dieting is not without goals, I have them, but they are different. This week, my goal is to eat fresh, raw vegetables as much as possible. I purchased a huge container of organic spinach and kale, lots of squash, apples, oranges, and bananas. My goal is to eat it all this week. To eat them first, not because I feel like I have to, but because I genuinely want to.  I like how I feel when I eat well, I need to feel good to complete all my goals. Not just the ones that result in a lower weight on the scale.

It’s been huge for me to let go of worry and possible outcomes. I’ve let go of the fear of the unknown. The fear of eating until I weigh 400 pounds. The fear of never stopping. The fear that I can’t control what I eat without a regulated system. I trust that I will stop and that I know how to hear what I really want and need. There are days when I shock myself with how soon I stop eating. And it doesn’t happen because I think “I should stop”, or “how many calories am I at now?” it just happens because I’m done.

I had a glimpse of myself recently. A glimpse of where I’m headed and it’s incredibly beautiful.

Diet Scams and how to spot them

I am sure that most people that have tried a diet have wondered about all of these diets or plans that seem to go to be true. I have found a great site for researching Diet Scams and it is worth checking out.

Also Ediets has a diet scam page. There are also other kind of scams, every now and then some kind of product comes on the market that is supposed to help you lose weight and often they can be dangerous.

It all comes down to a few factors to see if a weight loss plan makes sense to try or if it is a diet scam.

1. Does the diet have a reason to work? Do you do exercise to increase metabolism? Do you decrease your caloric intake to lose weight? If not it is probably a diet scam.

2. Is the diet sustainable for the rest of your life? Most diets are just that, a diet to be on for a few months with no plan as to how you will eat after it is over. Although some of these work it is really a diet scam if there is not plan that you know of to come off the diet.

3. Is there some strange herb that will increase your metabolism? I have seen at least a couple dozen of these magic herbs over the last few years and none of them has stayed for long. One of the problems is that to increase your metabolism to magically lose weight these herbs are a danger to your heart or liver. All of these herbs are in my opinion a diet scam unless they can prove otherwise with scientific backing not just testemonials.

Simple Walking Tips

Everyone would like to get some exercise and I have walking Tips to help you out. Who of us won’t love to have all of that stubborn fat melt away quickly and easily? But if only it could happen. The fact remains that while you can burn sugar and calories really fast, the same cannot be said of fat, even though it is formed from calories and sugar.

Simple Walking Tips

Simple Walking Tips

That said, there are still simple ways to burn fat and lose weight, and when I mean ‘simple’, I obviously don’t refer either to starving for several days on end or doing long boring cardios for hours. Believe it or not, if you are prepared to walk everyday, you cannot but get rid of fat.

Many would argue that it would take several years for an overweight person to lose fat solely with the help of walking, in sharp contrast to intense workouts such as interval training. That might be true, but then again, how many of us have the stamina to bear the strain of intense workouts. The answer is, very few.

Walking Tips to Use Today

If you have never worked out in life, it is silly to even imagine that you would be able to manage those hard workouts with ease. On the contrary, walking is easy to do and it is not true that you cannot burn fat with it. You just need to be steady and patient and never lose heart. Here are a few walking tips for you to help you gain the maximum mileage from this exercise.

1. It is very important that you wear the correct shoes while walking, or you would be in danger of injuring your feet badly. I would recommend a pair of decent tennis shoes for this purpose, and you can buy them from your local store at an affordable price. With tennis shoes, the sole of your foot rests comfortably, thereby making walking easier for you with no fear of injuries

2. We often set fixed schedules for almost all the important activities of our life except that of looking after our health. This is a rather strange behavior as a one’s health comes before even his most important activity. It is easy for you to forget about your daily walking routine if you don’t schedule it like your other important tasks. Make walking your top priority, because it really IS

3. To burn even more fat from this exercise, you can carry one pound of weight in each of your hands. While walking, you can raise your arms over your head and then gently let them fall on the side. As you repeat this exercise while walking, it would make your heart beat faster and consequently you would be burning more fat

If you wish to carry the weight in your legs instead of hands, you can buy leg weights instead. They are available for varying amounts of weights, and are quite cheap too. You can get them for as low as $5 or $6, depending on the amount of weight you are buying

4. If you feel a bit impatient, you can add half-an-hour of extra intense workout along with your regular walking schedule
. The reason I left this tip for the last is that you should do it only when you are fully comfortable with walking. This can tremendously accelerate the weight loss process for you and you would be able to get rid of those annoying pounds quicker than you would with just plain walking.

Walking Tips – Apply Them Today

So my advice to you is to get started today. There is not better time to get started walking then this very day. Let me know how much these walking tips are helping you out.
