How To Quit Smoking Easily

If you are wondering how to quit smoking, you are not alone. Just about every smoker wants to quit, if they are honest. They may not want to stop smoking right now, but they hope that they will stop sometime in the future. They may even think it is something that they can do any time that they want – but if they try, they often find that they can’t. When you are ready to stop, you will want to discover how to quit smoking in the easiest way.

Even people who only smoke a couple of cigarettes a day become addicted to nicotine and have trouble quitting. In fact, it can be harder for those people because they often escape most of the obvious negative effects of smoking – disease, social unacceptability, etc. They do not have the motivation that a smoker with a pack-a-day habit has.

In fact, motivation is probably the most important factor on your side when you are considering how to quit smoking. When you really, REALLY want to stop, you will probably do it. But if you kind of want to stop because you know it’s bad for you, but at the same time you think you could do it later, you will have a lot more trouble.

Motivation to Quit Smoking

So the first thing to do when you are figuring out how to quit smoking is to work on your motivation. Make a list of all the reasons that you want to quit. These could include:

  • avoiding smoking-related diseases
  • getting rid of that pesky cough
  • not having such a hard time when you catch a cold
  • better sex
  • whiter teeth
  • better skin
  • being more active
  • not damaging the health of those close to you

and most of all, being FREE from the terrible addiction. This freedom is something that non-smokers take for granted but it’s one of the most motivating factors that you can experience. As you quit, keep reminding yourself of the freedom that will be yours as soon as the withdrawal symptoms begin to lose their power.

Handling Quit Smoking Withdrawal Symptoms

The next step is to learn about those withdrawal symptoms and plan how you will deal with them. If you are troubled by irritability or afraid that you will gain weight, there are nicotine replacement therapies or even meds that can help with these things. Arm yourself with information and advice from your doctor.

Dealing with irritability and mood swings can be tough. If you are going cold turkey and not planning to take use any nicotine replacement, it is important to apologize for any outbursts that you have and remind the person that you are quitting smoking (even if they already know that). But this excuse for bad behavior gets old fast! Non-smokers will only accept it for a few days. Those who have quit will be more sympathetic, but current smokers may just encourage you to have a cigarette, so stay away from them.

Smoking Effects On Health

It is well known that there are many negative smoking effects on health. Nicotine is a poison and other substances in the inhaled smoke can have a bad effect on the lungs too. In fact, the downside of smoking is so significant that most non-smokers have trouble understanding why anybody would smoke at all.

Smoking Effects On Health

Smokers who are not interested in quitting will usually ignore these effects, saying that their health is okay right now and they will quit at some unspecified time in the future. So it is not usually possible to persuade somebody to quit by telling them all of the bad things that may happen. It is not even useful, because it only makes them anxious so they want a cigarette to calm them. Besides, people need to be strongly and profoundly motivated in order to quit successfully. It is not enough to know the dangers intellectually.

But a smoker who wants to quit can benefit from looking closely at some of the smoking effects on health. It can be very motivational to keep a list of these side effects when you are quitting.

One of the best known smoking effects on health is lung cancer. This is a killer disease that shortens the life of many smokers and sometimes, their family members who inhale secondhand smoke. But lung cancer is not the only smoking-related cancer. Cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus have been shown to be caused by smoking.

Smoking has also been shown to affect a person’s chances of getting stomach and colon cancer, as well as cancers of the cervix, pancreas, bladder and kidneys. This may seem bizarre because the smoke does not come into direct contact with these organs but they are thought to suffer from oxygen deprivation and the buildup of toxins in the body. Cigarettes contain nicotine, tar and many other substances that will affect the workings of the body over the years.

Smoking-related cancers can hit at a younger age than you may imagine. They are not limited to old age but often affect people in their 40s.

There are other smoking effects on health that will be important to younger people too. One of the most significant is the effect on the sexual organs. This can affect fertility in both men and women, as well as reducing sexual pleasure and contributing to male dysfunction. Smokers as young as 35 are 50% more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than non-smokers.

It is well known that if a woman smokes while pregnant, the fetus is likely to be affected. Babies are often smaller, with a weaker immune system. This may also happen if the woman has to be around other people who smoke. Kids can be damaged too if they grow up in a house where the parents smoke. Their development may be slower and their general health worse, with more colds and other infections.

Smoking also affects the skin. This is due to two factors: first, the buildup of toxins that are excreted through the skin, and second, oxygen deprivation. The result is that the skin becomes dry, wrinkled and old-looking before its time. Smokers also tend to be less physically relaxed and the facial muscles are overly tense during smoking, leading to wrinkles. So even if a person escapes serious disease, they may be hit by other negative smoking effects on health.

Pregnancy and Smoking: The Facts

Pregnancy and Smoking are very dangerous for you and your baby. Your doctor will have told you that pregnancy and smoking are not a good mix, if you didn’t already know. But at the same time you may know of people whose parents smoked who seem perfectly normal and healthy. Maybe your own mother smoked when she was pregnant with you. So what is the problem?

Unfortunately statistics show that if a woman smokes during pregnancy the baby is much more likely to suffer from certain issues. This doesn’t mean that every child will be affected in an obvious way. Maybe you and your friends escaped – but maybe you would have been even healthier if your mothers had been non-smokers.

Scary Pregnancy and Smoking Facts

The facts about pregnancy and smoking can be scary. The time when you are newly pregnant or thinking about starting a family is an excellent opportunity to stop smoking because you have this extra motivation. Your doctor and probably your family too will support you even more than they would at other times. Take some time to think about these risks if you are considering quitting.

The problems with pregnancy and smoking begin before you are even pregnant. Smoking affects fertility in both men and women. So if you both smoke and you want to start a family, it would be a great idea to quit together now.

Pregnancy and Smoking

How does smoking harm a fetus? From the moment of conception, the growing fetus is nourished by nutrients and oxygen passed to it in the mother’s blood through the placenta. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood and replaces it with poisonous carbon monoxide, so less oxygen reaches your baby. At the same time, some of the other toxins in smoke are carried in the bloodstream and can affect the healthy functioning of the placenta.

Because of these factors, there is more chance of something going wrong during the pregnancy. The issues with pregnancy and smoking mean that women who smoke are more likely to have a miscarriage or a baby who dies in the womb.

Facts about Pregnancy and Smoking

If the baby survives to birth, some of the effects of pregnancy and smoking on a newborn include

  • lower birth weight
  • more chance of premature birth
  • twice the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (‘cot death’)
  • twice as likely to be hospitalized in the first 8 months of life
  • more likely to suffer from ear infections, bronchitis and other diseases.

But in the end it is your choice to quit or not. Nobody can force you to quit, nor can they do it for you. The more you smoke, the greater the damage to the baby, so if you just reduce your smoking it is better than doing nothing. But the best thing is to quit.

If your pregnancy is stressful for any reason, it may seem like a difficult time to stop smoking. Remind yourself that nicotine is not helping your stress, it is contributing to it. It only seems to help because your body has become addicted. If you can get through the first couple of weeks without cigarettes you will find that you are much more relaxed. It is worth doing this for the sake of your baby if you can, because of the negative links between pregnancy and smoking.
