Belviq Weight Loss Pill to Treat Obesity

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Belviq weight loss pill (lorcaserin hydrochloride), as an addition to a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, for chronic weight management.

Who Can Use the Belviq weight loss pill?

The drug is approved for use in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obese), or adults with a BMI of 27 or greater (overweight) and who have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol (dyslipidemia).

BMI, which measures body fat based on an individual’s weight and height, is used to define the obesity and overweight categories. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese.

“Obesity threatens the overall well being of patients and is a major public health concern,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The approval of this drug, used responsibly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle, provides a treatment option for Americans who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbid condition.”

How Does Belviq Work?

Belviq weight loss pill works by activating the serotonin receptors in the brain. Activation of this receptor may help a person eat less and feel full after eating smaller amounts of food.

According to clinical trial data submitted by Arena to the FDA, nearly half of dieters without Type 2 diabetes who used the medication lost at least 5% of their starting weight — or an average of 12 lbs. — over a year, compared with 23% of those taking a placebo. For best results, dieters are advised to use the medication together with a healthy diet and exercise program.

However, the Belviq weight loss pill won’t immediately be available for sale. The drug has to go through a four-to-six month process at the Drug Enforcement Administration for a scheduling classification used for drugs that have a likelihood or potential of being abused

Who Should Avoid the Belviq weight loss pill?

Belviq should not be used during pregnancy. Treatment with Belviq may cause serious side effects, including serotonin syndrome, particularly when taken with certain medicines that increase serotonin levels or activate serotonin receptors. These include, but are not limited to, drugs commonly used to treat depression and migraine. Belviq may also cause disturbances in attention or memory.

In 1997, the weight-loss drugs fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were withdrawn from the market after evidence emerged that they caused heart valve damage. This effect is assumed to be related to activation of the serotonin 2B receptor on heart tissue. When used at the approved dose of 10 milligrams twice a day, Belviq does not appear to activate the same serotonin receptor.

How about Qnexa?

Another weight loss pill called Qnexa is expected to be approved in the next month by the FDA and would be direct competition to the Belviq weight loss pill.

According to researcher Michael Davidson from the University of Chicago, patients who took Qnexa experienced significant reductions in weight.

“In this study, Qnexa patients on the top dose had sustained weight loss greater than 10 percent over two years,” Davidson said. “This weight loss led to clinically relevant reductions in blood pressure, triglyceride reduction greater than 25 percent and a dramatic increase in HDL levels.”

He added that achieving and maintaining this degree of weight loss is often difficult for patients, and that these promising results show that the drug could be a good way to improve heart health and cholesterol levels.

Good News: Coffee is Good for You!

As you may have heard the results of a recent study suggest that drinking coffee can actually help you live longer. According to the results of this study regular coffee drinkers are less likely to die from the following causes: heart disease, lung disease, strokes, injuries, accidents, diabetes and infections. As a coffee addict myself, this is the best news I’ve heard in quite some time.

coffee beans Good News: Coffee is Good for You!

This is not the first study to suggest there are actually many positives to drinking coffee regularly. Among the positives found in other studies:

(1) Decreased chance of developing type 2 diabetes. It’s believed that the cause of this decrease is because of the antioxidants in coffee rather than the caffeine.

(2) Lower risk of stroke.

(3) Lower risk of heart disease.

(4) Lower risk of Parkinson’s disease (due to caffeine.)

(5) Significantly lower risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

(6) Decreased risk of cancer, particularly liver cancer.

Coffee Weight Loss

I’ve long thought that drinking coffee every morning helps with weight loss as the caffeine boosts the metabolism while also acting as an appetite suppressant. Of course any weight loss positives associated with coffee drinking are lost if you aren’t drinking real coffee (not decaf) but instead one of those 500 calorie desert “coffee” drinks from Starbucks. Forget about that stuff, it’s just an excuse to drink an extra dessert.

Drink real coffee!. Once you get a taste for it you won’t want to have any part of that super sweet stuff anymore. To a real coffee drinker those sugary Frappuccino type drinks are like kool-aid to a wine lover.

Health Risks of Childhood Obesity

There is a lot of concern over the growing rate of childhood obesity today.  In the United States, at least one child in every five is overweight or obese.  Genetic factors play a role but the primary causes of obesity are consumption of high-calorie foods and inadequate physical activity.

Due to the rising rate of obesity, weight-related diseases are becoming common among children and adolescents.  There are many health risks of childhood obesity, including the following.

Health Risks of Childhood Obesity

Type 2 DiabetesType 2 diabetes is a chronic disease linked to childhood obesity.  An increasing number of overweight children and teenagers suffer from this medical condition.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three children in the United States will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

High Blood PressureChildren who are obese or overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, which can lead to other health risks such as heart disease.

Cardiovascular Disease – Overweight children often suffer from high cholesterol levels as well as high blood pressure.  These two medical conditions are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.  Hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis is linked to high cholesterol levels in the blood, and is the most common cause of heart disease.  It can begin as early as childhood in overweight children.

Breathing Problems – Other health risks associated with child obesity are asthma and sleep apnea.  A large number of overweight children suffer from asthma.  Obese children can also have trouble sleeping as a result of obstructive sleep apnea.  This is a serious breathing disorder wherein the sufferer’s breathing is briefly interrupted during sleep.  If left untreated, apnea can lead to heart failure.

Gallstones and Liver Problems – Children and teenagers who are obese are likely to have gallstones.  Obese children are also at risk of fatty liver disease and liver problems that could lead to cirrhosis.

Orthopedic and Other Complications – Excessive weight bearing down on the body can cause orthopedic and joint problems.  Obese children suffer more often from fractures, muscle problems, arthritis, joint pain and bone deformities.

Metabolic Syndrome – It is estimated that 25% to 40% of overweight children will develop metabolic syndrome that could lead to diabetes and heart ailments.  Metabolic syndrome linked to weight problems include high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and abnormal lipid levels.

Future Health Risks – Child obesity carries health risks not only in the present but also in the future.  Children and teenagers who are overweight or obese are more likely to become obese adults.  Obesity in adults has a direct negative impact on their health and well-being.  In addition to increased cardiovascular risk, adults who are obese are more likely to suffer from diabetes and to develop certain forms of cancer.

What You Can Do Now

Childhood obesity is a serious health problem that should be dealt with as early as possible.  There are treatment options for obese children, such as diet and gastric bypass, but health professional believe that prevention is the best way to combat childhood obesity.  Parents should provide a balanced and healthy diet for their children.  They should also set a good example by leading a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious foods, and encouraging their children to participate in regular physical activities.
