News on Vioxx replacements

Two years ago there were problems found with arthritis medications that contained Cox-2 inhibitors and both Vioxx and Celebrex were pulled off of the market. If you remember the problem was that users of these products had a higher inciednce of cariac problems compared to a control group that took a placebo. Now Merck, one of the largest drug manufacturers worldwide is trying to create a new drug called Arcoxia that also uses Cox-2 inhibitors as a painkiller to tackle arthritis pain.

Merck wants FDA approval to sell Arcoxia, also known as etoricoxib, to treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis. The Whitehouse Station, N.J. company said its drug should be an option for the estimated 21 million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis.

The FDA is at this point against this new drug although Merck says that the results are the same as an older Arthritis drug called Diclofenac which although older is apparently safe.

The reason that I bring this all up today is because it seems that after the initial hype and banning of Cox-2 based pain control there have not been many studies and it would be nice to see more info on the good or the bad of these Cox-2 based drugs

Dr Gabe Mirkin on Protein and exercise

Dr Gabe Mirkin on his blog this week talked about how important it is to take in protein after exercise.

Protein as we all know is built in your body and constructed from 22 amino acids. Some of these amino acids can be made by your body and another few namely histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. In addition, the amino acids arginine, cysteine, glycine and tyrosine are essential amino acids – that is aminos that you need to get from your diet.

Dr Mirkin talks about the fact that your blood levels of amino acids drops after a tough workout and the sooner after you take in protein the better.

This is one of those things that I think is a bit of a myth in bodybuilding and that is the taking of amino acids. Amino acids can be bought in pill form but I really think that this is the most expensive way to get your nutrition. How about doing something a little more normal like drinking a protein drink after your workout? Another thing that you can do is make sure that you protein levels are good by eating more steak, chicken, and one of my favorite cheap protein sources, Tuna.

From now on if you do not do it already make sure that you get protein after your workout. Nowadays it is fairly cheap to get a vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder that you can mix with juice, milk or even water.

Fad Diet Plans You Should Avoid and Why

The insanity regarding loss has affected every obese person out there. And why not? After all, Christmas is coming, and people want to lose fast so that they look their best at parties. A decision to lose is a good one, but you need to do it healthily. Unfortunately, most people take to the unhealthy loss method called ‘fad dieting’ and end up losing muscles rather than fat.

Keep in mind that a fad diet cannot offer you a permanent loss solution; only a healthy food plan can. So don’t focus on how to lose fast; rather, focus on how to become healthy through weight loss. In this article I will tell you about top four fad diets you mustn’t follow.

1. Liquid diet: Under this diet plan, you are required to eat only liquids and avoid all solid foods. Liquids such as milk, protein shakes, and fruit juices are recommended. If you follow this diet only for a few days, you will become weak and limp. This is definitely not a practical diet to go with since you won’t be able to follow it for the rest of your life.

2. Grapefruit diet: Have you ever heard of or followed this diet? If you have, you will know that this diet plan restricts your food intake to a ridiculously low level, probably to that of a baby. Under this diet plan, you need to eat only grapefruit and protein-rich foods at every single meal of the day. This diet is based on the belief that when protein is combined with grapefruit, it accelerates a person’s fat burning process by enhancing his metabolism, thereby helping him lose weight.

Now this might be true, but ask yourself – could you eat grapefruits all your life? I would surely get bored. Plus the loss you achieve through this diet would be just temporary. Obviously, this is not a diet plan for you.
