Garcinia Cambogia: Weight-Loss Supplement May Be Toxic to Some

The use of Garcinia cambogia, a popular weight-loss supplement, may pose health risks to people who are taking certain antidepressants, a recent case report suggests.

Last year in Oregon, a 35-year-old woman who had been taking Garcinia cambogia supplements for two or three months while also taking an antidepressant started stuttering and sweating profusely. In the emergency room of a local hospital, the medical staff noted that the woman’s heart rate and blood pressure were high, and that she had also developed foot clonus, involuntary muscle spasms that cause a person’s foot to flex.

The woman’s symptoms were characteristic of serotonin toxicity, a drug reaction that occurs when levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin are too high. After the woman was given medication for serotonin toxicity and spent a few days at the hospital, her symptoms subsided and she eventually recovered. [14 Oddest Medical Cases]

“I am hesitant to label it [Garcinia cambogia] as a dangerous supplement, because until we see more than one case, we want to make sure that this actually is something that is going to occur,” said Dr. Robert Hendrickson, one of the authors of the case report.

However, previous studies on people and animals have shown that Garcinia cambogia may, indeed, increase serotonin levels. And taking the supplement in combination with antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which also cause serotonin levels to rise, could lead to serotonin toxicity, said Hendrickson, a toxicologist at the Department of Emergency Medicine of Oregon Health and Sciences University.

Hendrickson added that, based on the animal and human data suggesting both SSRIs and Garcinia increase serotonin levels, he recommends that people who are taking an SSRI not use Garcinia, at least until further research is done. “Not because I know that it will be dangerous, but because there is a chance that it could be,” he said.

“If I had a family member or a patient who was considering starting Garcinia and they were on an SSRI, I would recommend that they don’t do it for now,” Hendrickson told Live Science.

Garcinia cambogia, also known as tamarind, is a small, pumpkin-shaped fruit, and diet supplements made from it are touted for helping people lose weight. However, researchers have so far found only mixed results when looking at whether the supplement really helps weight loss. And one study in rats suggested that extremely high doses of Garcinia may cause testicular atrophy, and toxicity.

The woman in the case report had been previously diagnosed with serotonin toxicity while she was taking a different kind of antidepressant. At that time, she had also been taking Garcinia for a month or two, but she didn’t tell the doctor who prescribed her antidepressant that she had also been taking the weight-loss supplement, Hendrickson said.

Therefore, her doctor attributed her first case of serotonin toxicity to her first antidepressant, and switched her to another one. Then, she developed her second case of toxicity, for which Hendrickson saw her.

“The question is whether this person was uniquely susceptible to this problem, or if this is a bigger problem,” Hendrickson said. “And I suspect, over the next year or two, if this is a bigger problem — given the number of people taking Garcinia — we will see if there are a lot more people with this toxicity.”

The researchers said they cannot be absolutely sure that it was, indeed, the use of Garcinia that caused the patient to develop serotonin toxicity. Another potential, but less likely, trigger of the reaction, could have been the SSRI that she had been taking. Moreover, it is also possible that although the supplement she was taking was labeled as Garcinia, it might not have contained the supplement, but rather some other substance, Hendrickson said.

“There is a big difference between a pharmaceutical, like a medication, and a supplement,” Hendrickson said. Medications are highly regulated. “Supplements, on the other hand, are completely unregulated,” he said. Whereas people can be relatively certain that a bottle of medication contains the ingredients that it is supposed to contain, the same cannot be said about supplements. “There is no regulatory agency that’s watching that says that you had to test it and prove that there is Garcinia in it,” Hendrickson said, adding that there is also currently no way to test whether a certain pill really contains Garcinia or not.

Previous research has shown that some supplements did not contain the herbs or other substances that their bottles said they contained. Moreover, there have also been instances in which other substances sold as supplements contained pharmaceutical agents, Hendrickson said.

For instance, valerian root supplement pills that are sold as an herbal sleep aid have been found to contain valium, as it was cheaper for the pill manufacturer to use the drug than the herb, he said.

However, most capsules labeled Garcinia likely do include Garcinia, Hendrickson said. And because previous studies have shown that Garcinia causes a serotonin increase, it is quite likely that this also occurred in the case discussed in the study, the researchers said.

The study was published online April 4 in the Journal of Medical Toxicology.

Alli sells 2 million starter packs – But is it good news?

I have mentioned before that I am not a big fan of Alli and most of the trainers and experts that I have heard from do not advocate it’s use as the way to lose either. The “Wonder Drug” Alli that was released three months ago with lots of hype sold 2 million starter kits, the creators or Alli announced today.

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare announced today that it has sold more than 2 million alli(R) starter packs at retail, and that alli users are enthusiastically embracing alli and its proven track record of helping people lose gradually. This news comes as the company is breaking the first in a series of next-generation ads for the -loss product that depart from the typical “before and after” testimonials and offer an intimate and honest look at the healthy diet and lifestyle changes experienced by actual alli users.

Launched nationwide on June 15, alli is the only FDA-approved -loss product available to over adults without a prescription. The alli capsule works by blocking the absorption of about 25 percent of the fat in the foods people eat, helping them lose 50 percent more than they would through diet and exercise alone. alli starter packs contain alli capsules in 60, 90 or 150 counts, plus user’s guides, dietary support materials, access to a free online support program and the alli “shuttle(TM)” carrying case.

In addition to its retail success, alli is garnering intense consumer interest and discussion. Approximately 5.4 million unique visitors have logged on to the alli websites, myalli.com and the Spanish-language mialli.com. In addition, more than 200,000 people have enrolled in alli’s online behavioral support program. Consumers have also posted more than 125,000 messages on the official alli message boards, and tens of thousands are talking about alli on blogs and online discussion groups they have formed themselves.

As we all know, losing can be difficult and when there is as much advertizing and promotion as Glaxo Smith Kline did for a product like Alli. Although this looks like a lot of product to be shipped I am not sure that it is really a good decision. There are many other places around this blog that you can get info on losing but really losing comes down to making changes to yourself.

You need to make changes like healthier eating, getting some or more exercise and being very aware of the way and how often that you eat.

Often, and I can not really remember any of the Alli commercials, a loss product commercial will just show you skinny people playing and laughing and looking really hot. The images are great but they of course make Alli or products like them look like wonder drugs when in actual fact there needs to be changes made that are more significant than JUST popping pills.

Oh, and I just need to take one dig at Alli, I don’t expect the commercials showed poo stained clothes from the fat leakage that the product seems to trigger

5 Detox Diet Options

5 Detox Diet OptionsThere are at least five detox diet options when it comes to trying to clean out your body. I am going to stay away at this point from the battle between the detoxers and the non-detoxers. There is of course a camp of people that believe that there is no good that comes out of detoxing your body and that it is just a waste of time. I have no view either way but thought i would just offer these fixe options out to you to either try or to give you something to think about in the future

In order of complication to do her are five detox diet options
1. Fasting
2. Monodiet
3. Cleansing diet
4. Colon cleansing programs
5. Systemic detoxification programs

Fasting Detox

Fasting is the first detox diet option and is a good way to rest the digestive system and to help “burn off” surface toxins. Fasts can be done with pure water or fresh juices, prefer¬ably vegetable juices such as carrot, beet, parsley or wheat grass. You can do short fasts up to three days safely, but extended fasts should be supervised by a qualified naturopathic doctor. I have seen several patients harmed by long-term fasting.

Monodiet Detox

Monodiets are a detox diet that involves eating only one food for a period of one to five days. These are usually done with fruit such as grapes, grapefruit or apples. My favourite is the papaya diet because the fruit contains high amounts of natural enzymes, fibre, vitamin C and beta-carotene.

Cleansing detox diet

Cleansing diets are usually high in fruits and vegetables and mayor may not be accompanied by detoxifying herbal supplements. Examples of these diets are the alkaline diet, the mucusless diet, the natural hygiene diet, the Fit for Life diet and the macrobiotic diet.

Various companies offer a variety of cleansing kits, which can be combined with this type of diet to assist the elimination of toxins through the liver, kidneys and colon. The best herbs for liver cleansing are milk thistle, dandelion root, cheli-donium, boldo, curcumin, artichoke and black radish. Foods that help support liver detoxifica¬tion are cruciferous (cabbage family) vegetables, flax, sesame, sunflower and safflower oils, garlic and onions, raw nuts and seeds and, of course, all fruits and vegetables.

Colon cleansing detox programs

Colon cleansing programs are a popular way to begin a detoxification program. These include colonies, colema boards, wheat grass or coffee enemas and a variety of psyllium and bentonite clay cleansing formulas. While it is im-portant to have a clean colon, it is also important to realize that other methods should be included such as saunas and dry skin brushing for the skin, and herbs for the liver and kidneys.

Systemic detox diets

Systemic detox diets are highly specialized detox procedures performed by a naturopathic physician or other health practitioner. Using a variety of laboratory diagnostic tools including biological terrain analysis, live blood analysis, hair analysis, comprehensive stool and digestive analysis and specialized blood and urine tests, it is possible to determine the body’s burden of toxins and the specific type of toxin affecting the body. Methods currently employed to perform systemic detoxification include homeopathic drainage remedies, nosodes, ozone therapy, EDTA and DMPS chelation therapy, high dose IV vitamin C and vitamin-mineral drips, peat baths, constitutional hydrotherapy, colonic hydrotherapy with chorophyll implants and hyperthermic infrared sauna therapy.

I have written before about detox diets and the options that you have if you would like to detox your body but I think that if you are serios about this it is best to look for more in depth info before you embark on anything more than a 1 or 3 day detox diet.
