Psyllium Husk and Flax Seed Meal

Have you ever heard of Psyllium Husk? Psyllium is a type of small seed that is almost pure fiber. Taking a lot of fiber is supposed to help you to control your digestion, lower cholesterol and perhaps even lower the chance of Diabetes.

Flax Seed Oil has become really popular lately as a very high Omega 3 supplement. The advantage of taking Flax seed meal is that it is a powder that can be used for cooking as an addition to flour in recipes or as I will illustrate below.

What is Psyllium Husk and Flax Seed Meal?

Psyllium Husk when you buy it in the store comes in a small bag (at least mine did) and is very dry and looks like sharp pieces of dust. Flax seed meal on the other hand is a bit darker colored but is still very small pieces.

Get your flax seed meal and your psyllium husk and mix them in a bag or container in a 1 to 1 ratio. Now that you have this together you will quickly mix one tablespoon of the mix in a glass of water and drink it down. The mix does not taste good or bad but it is a kind of crappy consistency. After you drink this down it is important to drink a couple of more glasses of water.

I take this mixture once in the morning and once at night before bed.

What happens once this mix goes down your gullet? The flax seed is a nice and healthy addition to your Omega-3 and your fiber but the Psyllium Husk actually swells up and turns into a gel. The way this is supposed to help your body is by scraping and pulling off any toxins from the walls of your intestines.

The Effect of Psyllium Husk and Flax Seed Meal

In my case I have been gassy a bit over the last few days in taking this. From the people that I talk to that are taking this mix they tell me that this flax seed meal with psyllium husk makes their digestion better and also makes them feel healthier with better concentration and clearer thinking.

Try this with only a teaspoon morning and night instead of a tablespoon and see how your body reacts. Everyone is different so you want to try it slowly and increase over the days or weeks if you feel comfortable.

What Causes Diabetes?

Finding out what causes diabetes is something that has occupied researchers for very many years. Diabetes is a serious disease with several different forms.

What they have in common is that the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels adequately, either because enough insulin is not being produced or because the body has become resistant to insulin.

However, the causes are not as obvious as many people think.

There are three main types of diabetes, although others do exist. The best known are type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Causes Of Type 1 Diabetes

symptoms_of_diabetesType 1 diabetes is caused when the body’s own immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, destroying them. Usually most if not all of the cells are destroyed and the body is unable to produce enough insulin to regulate the amount of glucose in the blood.

Type 1 diabetes can strike suddenly, without warning. It runs in families so experts now believe that some people are born with a genetic predisposition to become diabetic. However, this is not the only factor.

In identical twins with identical genes, when one twin develops type 1 diabetes there is only a 50% chance that the other twin will get it too.

Therefore, there must also be something that triggers the disease. This trigger factor may be a virus or something environmental. Experts are still not sure what causes diabetes type 1.

There is not much that can be done to prevent type 1 diabetes although some research suggests that breast fed babies are a little less likely to develop it, as are people who had vitamin D supplemented as babies. In older children, vitamin B3 (niacin) may have a preventive effect.

Causes Of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes develops as a result of the body becoming resistant to insulin. This causes the pancreas to work harder, producing more and more, until eventually it cannot cope with the demand. Then, blood sugar levels slowly begin to rise, often taking several years to reach a point where diabetes would be diagnosed.

There is no single clear cause of type 2 diabetes. In most cases it is a combination of factors and sometimes it can appear without any obvious cause. However, the following factors all make it more likely that a person will develop type 2:

  • being over, especially if obese and if fat is concentrated around the abdomen (apple shaped person).
  • lack of exercise.
  • family history of type 2 diabetes.
  • having hypertension (high blood pressure) or a history of stroke or heart attack.
  • women having polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • smoking.
  • heavy alcohol consumption.
  • being in an African-Caribbean, South Asian or Hispanic ethnic group.
  • being over 40, with the risk increasing as age increases.

Causes Of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is diagnosed when a woman who has not previously been diabetic develops diabetes during her pregnancy. It is similar to type 2 in many ways but usually either disappears or improves at the end of the pregnancy.

However, a high proportion of women who suffer from gestational diabetes will go on to develop type 2 later in life.

During pregnancy, it is quite normal for the body to produce hormones that alter the way that insulin acts. This is necessary in order for the baby to get enough glucose.

In most cases, the woman’s pancreas will simply adjust the amount of insulin, producing more so that her own blood sugar levels remain normal. In some women, however, the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin to meet these extra demands. That is what causes diabetes in pregnancy.
