Fad Diet Plans You Should Avoid and Why

The insanity regarding loss has affected every obese person out there. And why not? After all, Christmas is coming, and people want to lose fast so that they look their best at parties. A decision to lose is a good one, but you need to do it healthily. Unfortunately, most people take to the unhealthy loss method called ‘fad dieting’ and end up losing muscles rather than fat.

Keep in mind that a fad diet cannot offer you a permanent loss solution; only a healthy food plan can. So don’t focus on how to lose fast; rather, focus on how to become healthy through weight loss. In this article I will tell you about top four fad diets you mustn’t follow.

1. Liquid diet: Under this diet plan, you are required to eat only liquids and avoid all solid foods. Liquids such as milk, protein shakes, and fruit juices are recommended. If you follow this diet only for a few days, you will become weak and limp. This is definitely not a practical diet to go with since you won’t be able to follow it for the rest of your life.

2. Grapefruit diet: Have you ever heard of or followed this diet? If you have, you will know that this diet plan restricts your food intake to a ridiculously low level, probably to that of a baby. Under this diet plan, you need to eat only grapefruit and protein-rich foods at every single meal of the day. This diet is based on the belief that when protein is combined with grapefruit, it accelerates a person’s fat burning process by enhancing his metabolism, thereby helping him lose weight.

Now this might be true, but ask yourself – could you eat grapefruits all your life? I would surely get bored. Plus the loss you achieve through this diet would be just temporary. Obviously, this is not a diet plan for you.

Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Use Fad Diets

People fail to lose not because they are lazy but because they follow fad diets. If you too are following or want to follow fad diets, don’t expect to lose and become slim. In this article I will tell you about three reasons why you shouldn’t use fad diets.

If fad diets were really so good, why not everyone is losing with their help? Weight loss cannot be achieved simply by dieting; there are a whole lot of things to consider here. If you are serious about loss, you need to modify your lifestyle habits: you need to change your unhealthy eating habits, you need to stop sitting on the couch, and you need keep your body active at all times.

Can a fad diet force you to do all these things? No. That is why even if you lose a few pounds initially with those fad diets, you will regain them all back as soon as you get back to your unhealthy lifestyle habits. So, if you really want to lose fast, don’t follow any fad diets; rather, be ready to change your lifestyle habits.

More often than not, fad diets put you into such a strict food restriction that you virtually remain hungry most of the time. Two things can happen here. Either, out of extreme hunger, you will eat loads of junk foods and gain loads of pounds in the process, or if you are one of the ‘self-disciplined’ types, then you will try hard to bear with your hunger, in which case, your body would take over.

When your body receives inadequate food supply, it would assume that you are going to kill it. In such a case, your body would move into a ‘starvation’ mode where it would horde fad deposits instead of burning them. Naturally, you

You have a third reason for not dieting. Why the hell would you starve when you can eat and lose ? Believe it or not, if you eat healthy foods and stay away from calorie-rich junk foods, you will automatically start losing weight. Plus your body would love the fact that it is getting more nutrition than before from your meals.

Make sure that you include foods such as natural fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, apples, legumes, soy, lean chicken meat, etc., in your diet. Also don’t forget to drink green tea regularly. These are special loss foods which would not only keep you full but also help you burn fat and lose weight.

I don’t know about you, but if I am offered the option to choose between losing through starvation and losing by eating, I would choose the latter.

Fast rise in hyper obesity in the US

We all know how bad the obesity problem is but I found this article on MSNBC that is saying that the growth is people more than 100 pounds over – the Hyper Obese – is growing at an alarming rate.

People who are 100 pounds or more over are the fastest-growing group of over people in the United States, researchers reported on Monday.

They found the proportion of the severely obese was 50 percent higher in 2005 than it had been in 2000 — a startling rate of growth.

“The proportion of people at the high end of the scale continues to increase at a brisk rate despite increased public attention on the risks of obesity and the increased use of drastic loss strategies such as bariatric surgery,” said Roland Sturm, an economist at Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research institute.

“The explosion in the use of bariatric (-loss) surgery has made no noticeable dent in the trend of morbid obesity,” Sturm added in a statement.

The researchers found that based on self-reported height and , which tends to underestimate the part, 3 percent of Americans are already severely obese — defined as having a body mass index of 40 or higher.

Body mass index is calculated by dividing in kilograms by the square of a person’s height in meters.

The researchers, whose report will be published later this year in the journal Public Health, found that the proportion of Americans with a BMI of 30 or more increased by 24 percent between 2000 and 2005.

The proportion of people with a BMI of 40 or more increased by 50 percent and the proportion of Americans with a BMI of 50 or more increased by 75 percent.

The number of bariatric procedures, which include stomach stapling and stomach bypass surgery, rose to an estimated 200,000 in 2006 from 13,000 in 1998.
