What Can You Do About Those Wrinkles?



Wrinkles? it’s like a four letter word to most people. It’s a sign of aging and we all get them eventually. But why, for some people, do the wrinkles come so much later in life? And why do others get wrinkles way before you think they should? This article will take a look at what can cause wrinkles and what you can do, if anything, about them.

Wrinkles are the result of reduced collagen production. A majority of your connective tissue is made up of collagen and it’s responsible for the elasticity of your skin. When you don’t produce as much collagen, you end up with wrinkles.

It’s true that as we age we naturally produce less collagen. So no matter what, you will end up with wrinkled skin. The key is to make that date far into the future, not now.

Don’t smoke.
This is huge. Have you ever compared the faces of smokers to non-smokers. I’m sure you noticed which group had more wrinkles. Not only will stopping smoking help you to live longer it will help you to live longer with fewer wrinkles.



Stay out of the sun.
Too much sun over the years adds what looks like years to your face and the rest of your skin. Don’t be one of those darkly tanned, leathery-skinned people who move south after retirement and still worship the sun, in-between visits to their dermatologist. Sun worshipping is no longer cool. At the very least use sunscreen! I would also add that you should wear sunglasses outside to avoid squinting. Prolonged squinting brings out the wrinkles around the eyes and the forehead.

Live where there is less pollution and wind.
Wind can take it’s toll on your skin and so can smog and other air contaminants. Of course, it’s not practical to up and move, but if you have the opportunity to pick where you live, keep these factors in mind.

Avoid harsh chemicals and really hot water.
Hot water zaps the moisture out of your skin. Harsh chemicals in soaps and face cleaners can do the same thing. Know your ingredients and what those ingredients can do. Bottom line – if your skin doesn’t feel and look good after you clean it, change your cleaner.

Relax and enjoy life.
While I don’t have concrete proof on this one, I do believe if you can learn to relax and enjoy your life, your skin will reflect this. If you worry constantly and always have a negative attitude, imagine how this can make your face look after awhile.

Antioxidants and healthy eating.
Eating food rich in antioxidants such as tomatoes, blueberries, and green tea is beneficial to your health, and if you add antioxidant creams to your skin, all the better.

Use vitamin A.
Again on the subject of creams, use one that contains Vitamin A, also known as Retinol. Vitamin A helps keep your skin moist and it also has some antioxidant properties.

As you can see, there are many positive steps you can take to hold off those wrinkles a little longer. Some of these are lifestyle choices, such as not smoking, living in a clean air environment, and enjoying life. Throw in sunscreen, Vitamin A and antioxidants as well and your skin should look it’s best.

Looking Younger Options… Other Than Plastic Surgery



For many people, having plastic surgery (going under the knife) on their face for pure cosmetic reasons is out of the question. The cost goes way beyond what some people are able to afford or want to spend, and it’s invasive surgery which can be scary as well as carry some risk. In addition, there may be pain involved and the recovery time can be inconvenient. Yet, the desire to look younger is still there and has lead to several, less invasive possibilities which are explored here.

Currently Botox injections are a very popular way to lessen wrinkles. It’s the purest form of Botulinum toxin type A and when injected freezes the muscle it was injected into. This means the nerve impulses can’t reach the muscles, the area “relaxes” and the lines appear to magically disappear. Botox injections are not cheap and the cost depends on the area injected.

Retin A, or Tretinoin, is more commonly used for acne in teenagers and adults, but it can also help with fine lines and wrinkles. It’s believed that Retin A helps increase blood flow to the skin and that, in turn, increases dead skin cell turnover. The result is more even skin color and fewer fine lines. Many anti-aging topical creams now include small amounts of Retin A.

A chemical skin peel with acids such as alphahydroxy acid does not slow down the aging process, but it can make the skin look better. The peel removes the damaged outer layers of skin revealing the newer skin underneath. There are different peels depending on the deepness of the wrinkles and/or other skin issues.

Collagen is a natural protein found in our bodies, including the skin, where it helps with elasticity. Collagen tends to start breaking down with age, and the skin begins to become saggy and wrinkled. Some women get collagen injections to increase the size of their lips, but it’s more commonly used for facial wrinkles. Human or bovine (cow) fillers are used.

Microdermabrasion is the resurfacing of the skin. It sounds like your face will be a construction zone, doesn’t it? But it’s a non-invasive and gentle removal of the top layer of skin – the dead cells, by blasting very fine crystals at the skin and then vacuuming them up. The end result should be younger-looking skin without any recovery time.

If you choose to have one of these procedures done, make sure you see a qualified practioner for the best experience. As with any treatment, there are risks involved and you should understand these fully before proceeding.

Chinese Cashew Chicken

Yesterday’s eats…

Greek yogurt, Crofters blueberry spread and cashews.

Lunch and dinner. My own recipe of cashew chicken, which I’ve gotten pretty darn good at making. Check out that rooster sauce making it look fancy.

I killed my sugar craving with grapes. I forget how sweet red grapes are.

Not photographed (because it looked gross) was a mixture of yogurt, peanut butter and jam. It was so good! I’m obsessed with Maranatha crunchy peanut butter, best peanut butter ever.

I finished the evening with a session of Zumba which was much needed. I was feeling too in my head after yesterday’s post and just needed to act rather than think. I ate about 1,937 calories and burned anywhere from 500-700 calories. My net calorie goal is around 1,400-1,600. I’m pretty pleased with my day.
