Hypnosis For Weight Loss

Is hypnosis for weight loss an effective technique? Many people have successfully used hypnosis for many conditions, including weight loss.

Hypnosis is not anything mysterious or occult; it is really putting yourself in an extremely relaxed state so that your mind becomes suggestible to new patterns and ideas.

How To Get Started With Hypnosis

hypnosisHypnosis can be done yourself, with the help of a professional or even with an audio or video.

If you are thinking of going to someone who practices hypnosis, make sure you feel comfortable with them. If you don’t know them ahead of time, be sure to check their credentials and try to find testimonials regarding their ability.

It is simpler and less expensive to use self-hypnosis. You may want to get a tape, CD or video that puts you in a hypnotic state. You can find programs that are especially geared to specific issues like weight loss.

Some of these may contain subliminal messages -that is, messages you cannot consciously hear. Others simply have audible messages. They usually contain relaxing music and a countdown to put you in a relaxed and receptive state.

How Can Hypnosis Help You?

How can hypnosis help you to lose weight? It comes down to the fact that all of your behavior is based on your beliefs.

This includes the foods you eat and the amount of exercise you get. You may, for example, be eating more than you have to because you believe you need this food.

Or you may have resistance to exercising. Hypnosis can help to change some of these stubborn, unhelpful beliefs.

The key to hypnosis is that it works on the subconscious mind. Some of the beliefs you have -about yourself, food or exercise, for example- you may not even be consciously aware of.

When you go into a hypnotic state, you gain access to deeper recesses of the mind. In this state, the resistance you have when fully awake is lessened and you become receptive to new ideas and beliefs.

If you want to try hypnosis, keep in mind that it may take some time and persistence before you get the desired results. Remember, the beliefs and behavior you want to change took many years to become habits.

So changing these, while certainly possible, may take more than one or two sessions. Whether you go to a professional or use self-hypnosis at home, make up your mind to give this method a chance to work.

The Alternate Dumbbell Press

The Alternate Dumbbell press is a great exercise for you shoulders and triceps as well as good for coordination for the upper body.

Position: A standing position with the feet a comfortable distance apart and a dumbbell held in each hand at the shoulders.

Action: From this position, the dumbbells are pushed overhead until the arms are locked at the elbows, then returned to the shoulders and the motion repeated.

alternate dumbbell press

The arms are extended overhead alternately.

First, one dumbbell is pushed overhead and as it descends to the shoulder the other dumbbell is pushed overhead.

One is rising as the other is descending. If one arm is stronger than the other it is wise to start with the weaker arm and concentrate on its effort.

Breathing: Inhale as the weaker arm pushes the overhead and exhale as the stronger arm goes overhead.

Starting Resistance: Women can start with 7½ lbs. in each hand with ease. Men can begin with 15 lbs. in each hand.

Progression: Begin the movement with 7 counts for each arm, adding 1 count each week until 12 have been performed for three periods. Then add 2½lbs. to each and begin again at 7 counts.

Goal: Girls and women should work to 20 lbs. in each hand. Men and boys should work to a resistance of 50 lbs. in each hand.

Results: This movement will develop the muscles of the arms and shoulders, particularly those in the back of the arms.

The muscles of the upper back that control the movement and position of the shoulder blades, are also involved. It is also of value to equalize the strength of the arms.

Comments: A most common fault in the performance of this exercise is that of holding one hand at the shoulder while the other is raised.

For best results one arm should be extended overhead as the other is being lowered, so that one reaches arms’ length overhead the moment the other touches the shoulder.

Choosing a Gym – Distance from Home

On about one of thee thing that I have found critical overtime, and that is a main determining factors on whether you will go to the gym now or then or all of the time is convenience to your local gym or gym at work.

You may think motivation will always carry you through but in actual fact if you are only a block away from the gym you will probably have a better chance of making it to the gym on a regular basis.

How Close Are Your Local Gyms?

gym equipmentThe closest gym to your house may not be the best one for you but the important thing is to look at your schedule and decide when and where you are going to work out.

In the past I have worked out before work, at lunch and in the evening.

Decide when in your schedule you would like to fit in your exercise and from there decide when.

  • Are going to work out before work?
  • Are you going to go to the health club at lunch?
  • Are you going to go to the gym after work or after dinner?

One other time that you may think about a workout is on the weekend.

If you are going to be working out during the week closer to your workplace then maybe going to the gym on the weekend is just not that important to you.

Distance, Price, and Convenience

On the other hand if you have a busy schedule during the week then going to the health club on the weekends may be one of your best options and in that case you will want the gym to be close to home.

I have found in the past that the price that a gym charges is based on how far it is from the downtown core.

Here in Calgary I was once able to join a gym in a non residential area for $19 per month and another downtown for $55 per month..apparently a good deal though.

You are going to find that if you want to have a buddy or spouse join a health club with you then it will have to be close for both of you and convenient for both of you as partnerships in the gym are really hard to keep.
