Can Marijuana Help Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

Although smoking cigarettes is generally harmful to your health, people have been smoking since 5000 BC and many people find it so difficult to quit smoking despite many alternatives available to combat the smoking habit. A study conducted in 2013 at the University College London revealed that Cannabidiol which is the second most active ingredient in marijuana can reduce cigarette addiction. It’s proven that CBD lessens the withdrawal symptoms of smoking cigarettes, thus making the quitting process easily manageable.

When one stops smoking, the brain constantly craves for reinforcements to compensate the reduced intake of nicotine. CBD elements combat that and allow for reduction of negative symptoms that come with withdrawal symptoms. Since the research findings are limited to only one study, it’s still not clear whether Cannabis is a proven solution to those who want to quit smoking.

Marijuana seems to be a natural alternative for people who want to quit smoking tobacco. Since nicotine releases the brain’s happy chemicals known as dopamine that causes an addiction, marijuana can also arouse dopamine chemicals without causing the harmful side effects that are associated with smoking cigarettes.

Marijuana is also the best option for those seeking ways to treat their addiction to heroin, opiates, tobacco, and other drugs. Marijuana can also be helpful in curbing the smoking addiction especially if one considers reasons why people smoke. Stress and Anxiety Relief many people smoke to reduce stress and anxiety. Cannabis is known to have elements that slow down the anxiety.

Additionally, there are three proven herbs that can reduce the nicotine craving, these include; Avena Sativa (derived from wild oats), Lobelia (a toxic plant that is consumed in tiny portions to fool the body system), and Garcinia Cambogia (that combats the weight gain that comes with quitting nicotine).

Although the previous studies on the topic are essential, there’s still more to be done so as to prove whether Cannabis can help reduce the effects of nicotine for those trying to quit smoking.

Dodgy herbal supplements blamed for liver injury

Dodgy herbal supplements are a common cause of liver injury, with bodybuilding and weight-loss products among the worst offenders.

US drug-induced liver injuries linked to supplements jumped from 7% in 2003 to about 20% in 2014, a study has found.

And studies in Europe show similar increases.

Last year, two cases of severe liver toxicity in Australian men — involving green tea extract, garcinia cambogia and valerian — prompted calls for tighter regulation.

In a new analysis of 272 herbal dietary supplements, 51% had inaccurate labelling, according to researchers presenting their findings at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

“Herbal supplements are a common cause of liver injury,” says lead author Dr Victor Navarro, a hepatologist based in Philadelphia.

Dr Navarro is part of a group of investigators known as the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network, supported by the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, which collects cases of drug-induced liver injury.

He says that, in 20% of cases, the injury is caused by dietary supplements.

Many of the products are sold as bodybuilding supplements or weight-loss supplements, he adds.

All of these cases have been reported to the US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration, but Dr Navarro says the next step is to build a stronger causality argument.

“We’ve identified some products we’re convinced cause liver injury, but right now it’s very circumstantial,” he says.

In Australia, herbal and dietary supplements are regulated by the TGA.
