Palate Training Tips to Help Your Kids Avoid Weight Gain.

If you thought your kids have acquired their junk food eating habits from peers, you may not be wholly true. Habits start quite early in the life of a human, and if your kid is taught the benefits of healthy eating right from infancy, they are less likely to indulge in junk food eating out of peer pressure, if at all, than otherwise. A formula which works very well in this case is palate training.

Contrary to its name, this formula is pretty simple and straightforward, in that it doesn’t require any expert knowledge on your part. It was invented by two members of the Good Food Village Trust, Louise Rutten and Mitzy Wilson. Palate training is all about training the tastebuds of your kids in such a way that they start loving natural and healthy foods much more than those yummy fast foods. So let’s get right on it as to how to start training the palates of your kids.

1. Let them appreciate natural foods: Your kids would eat organic foods only when they love them. From quite an early age, you should teach your children that beets or carrots don’t taste bad. Conventional preaching doesn’t work too well in case of kids for whom, seeing is believing.

So you could go a bit further, peel off a carrot and let your kid lick it with his tongue or chop it off and ask him to put a piece on one side of his mouth and keep it there for a few moments to enjoy the taste. Such small and gradual steps would make your kid addicted to carrots. In fact, you can use this formula for any food you want your kids to eat.

2. Don’t encourage bad habits at home: While it is true that you don’t have absolute control over what your kid eats when he is out of home, you could still control his eating habits in a number of ways.

For example, when he goes to school, pack his lunch box with healthy fruits and vegetables. If your kid doesn’t eat it at school, make him eat the same at home. It is still possible that your kid may have a bite of pizza or hamburger at school or a sip of soft drink at a friend’s party. However, they won’t get addicted to them if you don’t allow those foods at home, since a kid needs to eat a particular food at least 14-15 for him to get addicted to it.

3. Walk the talk: It is easy to preach the benefits of healthy eating to your kids but do YOU follow your own advice? Keep in mind that kids have a tendency to emulate the adults, particularly their parents, and if they catch you enjoying a packet of chips on a lazy Saturday evening, why would they be contented with a carrot or cabbage? If you wish to inculcate good eating habits in your kids, you need to adopt them yourself first.

Quiting Smoking and Weight Gain

Q: It’s already bad enough that I have to quit smoking, and now I have to fight gain. That’s not healthy, either. Isn’t that like giving up one bad habit for another? Is there something I can take to prevent this?

A: It is very common to gain after you stop using tobacco. It may help if you understand why.

First, smoking cigarettes creates an oral fixation. When you remove the cigarettes, that oral fixation remains. Tobacco also suppresses the appetite and decreases both taste and smell. When you stop using tobacco, your appetite and sense of taste and smell come back with a vengeance. The result is that food usually becomes the focus, and that increases the amount of calories you eat.

Second, your body has been accustomed to smoking a certain number of cigarettes per day. Each time you smoke a cigarette, your heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase and the effect is almost equal to walking up one flight of stairs per cigarette. If you stop smoking cigarettes, you are no longer getting the temporary increased metabolic effect of walking up those flights of stairs. Now you are burning fewer calories on a daily basis.

This is The Reason for quiting smoking gain

These two effects mean you are increasing your calorie intake and decreasing your calorie expenditure. No wonder there is a gain. How do you combat this? Try some of these tips:

Exercise. People usually won’t eat during exercise and for a period shortly before and after exercising, so this distracts you from your oral fixation and also burns calories. Now is the time to run those flights of stairs for real.

So what if it is really that easy? What if all your beliefs about how hard it is going to be to quit are completely false? What if, after just one session of hypnotherapy or NLP you find it incredibly easy to become and remain a happy, confident non-smoker for life? The reason why hypnotherapy NLP are so successful is because both our beliefs about smoking and our habitual smoking behaviours reside within your unconscious mind. So whilst consciously we may wish to quit, all too often our all powerful unconscious mind simply would not let us.

Have low-calorie snack foods easily available. Pre-slice carrots, celery and bell peppers and store them in the fridge. Have fresh fruit in baskets. Try licorice, sunflower seeds, and sugarless gum or candy.

Have A Plan When You Quit Smoking

Have a plan of distraction for when the urge hits. Get a hobby if you don’t have one. For instance, when you get the urge to give in, plan on calling a friend, taking a walk, cleaning, knitting, writing a letter, washing the car or similar activities to divert your thought pattern. Usually after five minutes the urge will subside.

If you falter, don’t beat yourself up. This can cause you to cover up the bad feeling with food or rely on tobacco even more. It can end up as a vicious cycle. Forgive yourself and move on.

Remind yourself that after three days, the nicotine addiction is basically over. The urgent feeling to revert to tobacco comes from the emotional habit to use tobacco, not the chemical addiction.

Better Over Than Smoking

As far as replacing one bad habit with another goes, being over is the lesser of the two evils. Far more health risks are associated with continued tobacco use. The average gain after quitting smoking is 10 pounds, which can be tackled later when you have “kicked the habit.”

Unfortunately, there is no pill I would advise you to take to prevent gain. It is just going to take willpower and persistence.

Weight gain may be tough to overcome, but when you do, it just makes success that much sweeter.

Fat Sick and Nearly Dead 2

Last night my daughter, wife, and I sat down (my son would rather play Minecraft) and watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead 2. I liked it but when I posted about it on Facebook I got a comment that maybe I should be watching something a bit more uplifting.

Really, that was my attitude too when I sat down a year ago to watch the original Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I thought “Jeez, why would you let that happen?”. In fact both movies are a bit inspirational with the idea of juicing and how drinking fruit and especially vegetable juices can change your life for the better.

What is Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead 2 About?

fat sick and nearly dead 2You can read my review of the original movie but this one was a lot different than the first. As we start the movie we have Joe Cross admitting that life is not all pixies and unicorns, there are tough times and he did gain and lose weight over the three years between these documentaries.

This is a great setup for the documentary as the next hour and a half takes us through why the juicing works, how to do a reboot, and what makes us eat crap in the first place.

First the juice. This is the part of most food documentaries that make me a bit nervous. I like to eat fruits and veggies a lot, I love them. Also I love to eat meat and grains, and as we all know apparently meats and grains are the downfall of all western civilization (I wouldn’t make a great Paleo guy).

Joe Cross instead tells us that there is a better way. When his diet, or weight, or energy have gotten a little off the rails he will do a reboot. The Reboot is when he will eat nothing but fruit and vegetable juices for a week or 10, or even 15 days.

After Joe has finished that reboot he will go back to eating what he would consider a regular diet which is juicing, fruit, and vegetables in the morning and during the day and then a regular dinner that would include fruits and vegetables and meat.

The great thing about Joe Cross and his attitude about eating is that it really lines up with how I believe we should eat. Living food like fruits an vegetables, and even grains are most important and meats are less desirable but fine to eat in moderation. And stuff like candy and ice cream? Those are foods with no redeeming values but are eaten on very rare occasion.

Our Relationship with Food

The other things that Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead 2 deals with is the relationship that we have with food. Food is something that people use to comfort them, and give them satisfaction and this is a problem.

There are a few doctors that Joe Cross has on the documentary and one of them talked about exactly how people will make decisions to eat crappy food because of how the hormones that kick in with a lot of fat will make you feel satisfied and kind of doped up to make you feel better. This help people that are lonely, disappointed, or not satisfied with their life.

Another doctor (wish I caught the names) was saying that as we con ourselves into eating bad eating decisions by giving ourselves rewards. The example was when you are in a Starbucks and you see all the great looking sweets and you will say to yourself “Not eating than, and not eating that, and not getting that” after you have made 6 or 7 of these “good decisions” you will get to the end of the line and reward yourself with a big fat muffin for making all those great decisions.

I hadn’t thought of this reward idea before but wow it does make sense.

What Else in Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead 2?

I may have learned quite a surprising amount in this movie, I thought it would just be a feel good documentary but there were so many great teaching moments as well. There is a lot more though.

Joe and one of the doctors talked quite a bit about the importance of support systems. Having support from like minded people is critical in anything we do. Also we got to see lots of feel good stories from people that were able to do the Juicing Reboot and found success and the fact that it is not crazy but actually cleansing and easier after a couple days.

The movie also has a lot of cute animations showing how our body and our brain work with food or lack of food.

What Are My Feelings About Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead 2?

I have to say that I really love this movie and even though I might have seen the first movie and a lot really was rehashed it was encouraging that maybe all the original questions were not answered and in this movie we get the opportunity to watch what juicing does and why from more angles.

What do you think of these kinds of documentaries? Are they interesting or boring? Do they encourage you or do they frustrate you?

I know that I have seen a lot of food documentaries that will make me feel guilty about eating meat or that make me want to picket some of those big companies that make food using terrible practices.

To me it is great watching a documentary live Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and this sequel. They may point out what we are doing wrong but just barely, instead the movies are more interested in encouraging us and showing us a better way instead.
