Making Diet Food Desirable



There are three main reasons why most people don’t stick to their diets. For one, they get too hungry and look to “comfort food” to fill the void. Secondly, they don’t like the taste of diet food, and out of sheer boredom they look for their usual, “exciting” (aka fattening) cuisine. And finally, many people simply can’t afford healthy options, and so it’s back to the drive-thru dollar menu. So how can we overcome these obstacles? This article will attempt to provide an answer.

We will address three things that can be done immediately to not only identify “diet food” that will have your taste buds thanking you, but to also fill up your tummy without emptying your wallet. I personally believe that you deserve the best of all worlds… health, happiness, satisfaction, sensation, and affordability. So let’s make it happen!

3 Steps to Overcoming Common Dieting Obstacles:

1. Go natural. The closer you can get your diet to 100% natural, the better off you will be. This means instead of buying a frozen or prepackaged meal, do some actual produce shopping. Buy fresh, lean meats. And don’t be afraid to prepare meals yourself. There are many diet plans out there that rely almost solely on you “eating like a caveman.” When you eat like this, it won’t even feel like you’re eating diet food!

2. Vary your flavors and textures. One reason that people typically hate diet food is that not all flavors and textures are being represented in their meals. People like things to be chewy, salty, juicy, sweet, starchy, meaty, crunchy, spicy, flaky, and a vast array of other things.

Instead of fighting this natural desire for variety, embrace it. Incorporate “heavy” foods like mushrooms and avocados, stick to lean meats such as chicken, turkey, and fish. Try spaghetti squash for a sweet, hearty crunch. Sprinkle some sea salt on green apple slices. Let your own imagination serve you well.

3. Buy in bulk and clip coupons! The greatest way to save money on your grocery bill is to go into the store with a plan, a budget, and a pocket full of coupons! Seriously, I can’t stress enough how much you can actually save yourself when you buy big family packs of meat, take advantage of “buy one get one free” offers, and use coupons.

You may also want to check out the meat department’s “discounted meat” selection. If the freshness looks questionable, don’t bother… but I have found many, many great bargains on healthy “diet food” just by taking advantage of clearance items. Just remember to invest in some freezer bags and fill your freezer to capacity!

These three steps can truly go a long way in making diet food not only a heck of a lot more enjoyable, but a practical and affordable alternative to the garbage that continually contributes to our obesity, heart disease, stroke, and cancer epidemics.

Dole Health Summit: Part Two: Real Fruit Bites and More

One thing that stood out to me during the Dole Health Summit was how proud the employees are of their health and habits. Before I went to the Dole Health Summit I kind of expected that there would be fresh produce available, but I was not expecting it to be so delicious and thoughtfully prepared.

Throughout my life I’ve believed that health food and good food were on two different teams. It never occured to me that they could be one in the same. When I thought of health food, I thought of “diet food” and to me it was boring, raw, cold, and uninteresting. I grew up in the 90’s where people were told not to eat fat, so I doused my iceburg lettuce in fat-free ranch dressing. We were told to eat cottage cheese, fat-free frozen yogurt, diet soda, and celery sticks to be healthy.

If I’m being totally honest, the concept of healthy can equal delicious is new to me. I use the term healthy loosely, because it seems that we all, scientists included, have our own idea of what healthy eating looks like.

But Dole managed to merge the two worlds effortlessly. You’d never know that health food wasn’t delicious and you’d never feel deprived or cheated eating this way.  Good, delicious, thoughtful and interesting food. I want more of that in my life, the merging of healthy and delicious foods.

I realize that this may sound strange to those reading who already “get” it, but for me, it’s been a very long journey to this point. You see, it wasn’t until my mid-20’s that I had fresh blueberries, cherries, salmon, black beans, avocados, asparagus, dark leafy greens, or roasted vegetables. Blueberries were made into muffins. Cherries came from a jar in syrup. Salmon was from a can. Beans were brown or green and swimming with bacon. And vegetables were cooked in the microwave.

I’ve since taught myself to enjoy interesting and new flavors. I prefer tea and coffee unsweetened. I rarely drink soda or diet soda. I’m not afraid to try new foods. I want to continue challenging my to change my definition of what good food is. Good food can be a local burger or butternut squash roasted to perfection with garlic, olive oil and chili powder. It can be coconut curry with chicken and vegetables. Good food, or delicious food, doesn’t have to be saturated in fat, salt or sugar to taste good. And I say these things as a reminder for myself, because I sometimes forget how good fruit and vegetables can be.

Even the Dole employee cafeteria offered a healthy array of food choices. We had the opportunity to eat breakfast there our first morning. You could choose from whole wheat pancakes, to breakfast burritos with made-to-order omelets, homemade salsa, and avacado, or lox with cream cheese, bran muffins or fresh fruit.

In the Dole test kitchen we had the opportunity to try out new products and old favorites. For me, you can’t go wrong with frozen banana soft serve. Oh the miracles of the internet for bringing this amazing concoction into our lives.

We tried the salad kits which were filled with things like dried cherries, blue cheese and nuts. Not to mention the Real Fruit Bites. I really enjoyed these a lot (maybe too much!). I liked that you could taste the oatmeal in them. Apple was my favorite, and pineapple takes second. Josh really liked these too and I was sad to find out he raided my goodie bag and ate most of my packets.

Next was a new product that I haven’t seen yet…

Dole Shakers. Basically they are frozen fruit and yogurt, similar to dippin’ dots. You add fruit juice to them and shake for an on-the-go smoothie. I really liked the taste of these and enjoyed the thick texture. Some of the other bloggers noted that they took on the flavor of whatever juice you use, I didn’t mind that though. I thought they were refreshing and could imagine using these in a pinch or while traveling. I also think they might be good with unsweetened vanilla almond milk to cut down the sugar.

Diet Food vs. Health Food

I’m here! I made it all the way to Wednesday without blogging, yet I’ve had so much to share. I started Insanity again with Josh. We started last year and made it all the way to day four and then I got sick and then we never did it again.

We started Monday evening with the fitness test, which was not easy, but I was a little excited to see that my numbers in some areas were high than others. They provide you with a little 60-day calendar to check off each day that you complete a new session so it’s really satisfying to cross off each completed day.

I’m very sore, but I feel so good to exercise in the morning, it really sets the tone for the day.

So that brings me to my next topic. Food. I’ve been doing really well with tracking my food and making an effort to cook at home and eat vegetables and fruits. I spent a good chunk of the weekend and last week cooking and trying out new recipes that I hope to share this week.

I’ve been thinking a lot about “diet food” and I realized that I hate diet food, but I love health food. To me diet food is anything in a package that has a weight-loss claim (low fat! low calorie! low carb! lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks!). Diet soda, bars, shakes, cookies, crackers, margarine, cereal etc.

Today I had a salad for lunch that I would call health food, not diet food. This is food that sustains and satisfies me. It leaves me feeling emotionally and physically good. It is delicious, and doesn’t have a lot of calories. 400 to be exact.

Okay, yes it looks dressing heavy! Here is the run down of my salad:

organic/local mixed greens, local feta, organic bacon, 2 local hard boiled eggs, 1 T slices almonds, and 2 T yogurt dressing.

But it’s not just about salads, it’s about wholesome food that we make with our own hands. It doesn’t have big claims. The lettuce didn’t promise I’d lose weight on the package. Nor did the eggs, cheese, or bacon. It just is. And it’s good.

That was a lesson a learned today.
