The Social Diet

The problem a lot of people have when dieting is the fact that they like going out and being sociable; part and parcel of this is eating out with friends. Now eating out whilst dieting can be hard BUT you don’t have to panic, you can use these five simple tips that will allow you to eat out with you friends without breaking your diet rules or piling on the pounds.

1. Eat A Small Fat Loss Snack Before Eating Out

Some great fat loss snacks include:

  • Nuts
  • Tuna mixed with cottage cheese
  • Carrot sticks with humus

This is so you don’t over indulge at the restaurant, and it will help HOWEVER, the best way to truly conquer this is by mastering self discipline. Another method of self discipline that will help is by stopping eating when you are full; it will be hard at first (especially if your at a nice restaurant) but as with everything, you will get better with practice.

2. Pick Food That Is Comprised Of The 3 Fat Loss Food Groups

fruits-and-vegetablesThe three fat loss food groups are:

  •  Protein: Eggs, Chicken (breast or thigh) Beef, Fish, Pork, Lamb
  •  Legumes: Black Beans, Lentils, Red Beans, Soya Beans, Borlotti Beans
  •  Vegetables: Mixed Vegetables, Peas, Broccoli, Green Beans etc. Any vegetables are allowed

If you pick food at the restaurant that includes protein, vegetables and legumes then you can’t go wrong! These foods make your brain release fat BURNING hormones so no matter how much you eat you won’t put on any fat. Also don’t be shy to request anything, for example “can I have a side salad instead of chips” or “In my burger take away the cheese and mayo, add extra lettuce and tomato.”

3. Eat Slowly

It takes twenty minutes for your brain to realise you’re full, this means if you eat fast you are likely to over eat by about twenty minutes; if you eat slow on the other hand, your brain  will register you are full a lot earlier and you will end up consuming less calories as a result.

4. Drink More Water

When you are mildly dehydrated the brain sends out hunger signals, I recommend drinking a pint of water before you leave for the restaurant (you will get full faster) or next time you are hungry. If you get into the habit of reaching for a glass of water before you reach for the cookie jar your on to a winner!

5. Load Up On Vegetables

Vegetables have a very low effect on blood sugar level and have very low calories. By loading up on vegetables you can kill two birds with one stone as you are adding more of one of the fat loss food groups to your meal.

Baked an orange cake for my aunt, but didn’t get to give it to her due to the weather. This was taken after Josh dived in. I had a piece too and froze the rest.

I made jerk chicken with saffron rice. I rolled about a pound of organic chicken thighs in jerk spices and this drizzled with honey and olive oil and baked at 375 degrees for about 24 minutes. So, so good!

I would probably wear it outfit anyway, maybe even with my John Cusack pin. This fushia lipstick is perfect. I got it from the Sephora Collection in color Mr. Lover. It stayed on all night and wasn’t dry at all like some lipsticks tend to be. The dress is from Forever 21, it just came in the mail. The jacket from Coldwater Creek. The tights from Kmart. The belt from Old Navy. Modern retro outfit?

Lunch at Wildflour in Roanoke. I had the steak salad (yup, there is actually a salad under the mountain of sweet potato fries!) with a killer ginger dressing that our waitress recommended. This restaurant is one of my new favorites. I can’t say enough good things about it.

Josh had the shrimp and avocado quesadilla and a side salad.

Then we popped into the book store next door and where I found these gems. I’d like to do a Julie and Julia experiment with the Chocolate and Zucchini French cookbook. So many good recipes to try! I think I’ll give myself until the end of the year to make them all.

Our final stop was for gelato at Pino Gelato in Roanoke. I had hazelnut and cheesecake, Josh had coffee and hazelnut.

And last, but not least, I lost 2.35 pounds this week, taking me to the 10 pound loss point!

Brown Butter Mushrooms With Creamy Noodles

I have a new love…

Cremini Mushrooms

Don’t tell Josh, but it’s starting to get serious. These cremini (crimini?) mushrooms are downright life changing. I like to say pretty much all things that I love are life changing, but these guys are dear to my heart. They are so rich and satisfying. That umami flavor does it for me. And cats too apparently.

I can’t tell you when I first tried mushrooms, but I’ve know about this love for awhile now. I grew up with a mushroom (and egg!) hating mom who I can confirm would never serve mushrooms to me as per my previous post. One day I’m going to get her to love mushrooms. One day mom, just you wait!

If you too love mushrooms then this very quick and easy recipe is for you!

Brown Butter Mushrooms with Creamy Noodles

Ingredients:

brown butter mushrooms: 5 C. chopped cremini mushrooms, 1 t. salt, 2 T butter

creamy noodles: half package of egg noodles (4 C. cooked), 1/4 C. sour cream, 1 T butter, 1/4 t. salt, 1 t garlic powder, 1 T dried parsley (plus more for garnish), 1/2 C. chopped provolone

Directions:

Prepare egg noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Wash and dry mushrooms and set aside. Heat butter in a large skillet until it begins to turn brown or a light amber color. Add mushrooms to the pan, careful not to overcrowd them. Add salt and stir. Cook until tender.

Put noodles back in the pot on medium heat. Add butter, sour cream, salt, garlic powder, and parsley to the noodles. Stir until the butter is melted and the noodles are heated thoroughly.

Place noodles on a large serving platter and top with provolone cheese. Add mushrooms to the top of the noodles and garnish with parsley. Serve with a side salad and enjoy!
