Eating on Holiday

This is a post that I have written also for my new Family Vacation blog about eating when on vacation.

Vacations are marred by bad eating and not only bad eating but usually our daily schedules are thrown out the window.

When you are away from home it is very common that you eat based on hunger and snacks are almost always bad food. Both of these are very bad and there are ways to avoid it. Last month while on vacation my family was able to conteract this bad eating structure by planning all of our meals and snacks and here is how:

Eating on Vacation

travelKitchenette – The hotel we stayed at had a kitchenette and this was easily the best way that we were able to avoid any eating issues. Kids are terrible for not wanting to eat when it is time to eat and then being suddenly starving. With the kitchenette we were able to prepare probably about half of our meals and warm up other meals as well.

Bag o’ snacks – I was the designated backpack carrier and we followed a process that we also used in Disneyland last year of keeping snacks and bottles of water in the bag. Although initially the bag is heavy, over the day the kids are force fed water and eat apples and nectarines and other healthy snacks. Not only does this keep the kids fed but they are happier with a more balanced blood sugar as opposed to just pushing pop and sodas into them all day.

Eat in breakfast – Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but the kids sometimes do not care. We never leave the hotel room until the kids have eaten some food in the morning. Given the choice the kids would grumble, complain and ask for whatever snack they could get. The problem with going out for breakfast is that most restaurants give you too high a fat meals and the kids don’t really want a big meal anyway. A big waste of 40 bucks for a family meal.

Initial run to the store – As soon as we get to a location I go out to the store for supplies. a 24 pack of water, some bread or buns, some fruit if affordable and snacky stuff for the kids. In Waikiki we had a store across the street but it was really expensive so we ended up getting food from a WalMart in town instead.

There are many things that you can do when on holidays to both eat better and save money. When traveling I always want to save money if I can but more importantly going to restaurants is a recipe for disaster. I have even heard of friends going to Hawaii and the kids getting sick from eating too much fast food, they ended up getting a kitchenette the next time.

Exercise For Diabetics

Exercise for Diabetics is very important as the underlying health problems, but at the same time needs of diabetics when it comes to improving health are very important.

The most common types of diabetes are known as Type 1 and Type 2. The Type 1 diabetes, which is also known as adolescent diabetes, differs from Type 2  in the sense that the body will stop producing insulin altogether.  Type 2 diabetes is normally diagnosed in older adults and occurs as the body stops producing enough insulin or the individual becomes resistant to their own body insulin.

No matter what form of diabetes it is, you’ll lose your ability to adequately utilize sugar.  The  blood sugar levels will increase due to the body’s difficulty in transporting sugar into the cells and out of the blood stream.  There are several ways to lower your blood sugar levels, including diet, exercise, and medication. This is where exercise for diabetics is very useful in the short and long term.

Exercise For Diabetics

As a whole, exercise is a very important part of diabetic management for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics.  For exercise For diabetics that have Type 1 will find regular exercise helps to maintain insulin sensitivity,  helps to prevent the accumulation of excess weight, and also increases the use of glucose by muscles. Although there is really no way to prevent Type 1 diabetes, it is possible to prevent Type 2 diabetes.  The things to consider when you attempt to prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes are regular exercise supplementation with vitamins and herbs that will  help to prevent insulin resistance and proper control of weight.

Not only with exercise for diabetics helps to manage by lowering blood sugar levels and  maintaining insulin sensitivity, but it will also help minimize several of the complications that can occur in a diabetic individual.  Research has shown that walking 30 minutes each day can  diminish the possibility of developing Type 2  diabetes.

Almost all diabetics tend to develop circulatory problems and exercise for diabetics can help lower blood pressure and improve circulation throughout the body. Seeing as how people with diabetes tend to have poor blood flow to their lower areas and feet, better circulation is a great benefit. Even though there are risks associated with  exercise, the potential benefits will outweigh the risks.

Exercise for diabetics is helpful and does indeed lower blood sugar levels, so those with diabetes should measure their blood sugar both before and after they exercise.  Since your body uses more sugar while you exercise and makes you more sensitive to  insulin, there is a risk of blood sugar becoming too low and causing hypoglycemia as a result.

Whenever you exercise, it is important to let others know that you are diabetic.  They should also be informed about what they should do in case of hypoglycemia.  To be on the safe side, you should always carry candy or fruit juice with you to treat low blood sugar when it occurs.

Exercise for diabetics – What to watch for

During and after you have exercised, you should pay very close attention about how you feel, since rapid heart beat, increased sweating, feeling shaky, or hunger can signal that your blood sugar levels are getting too low.  With diabetic management and treatment, exercise is very important.  Exercise will help with blood sugar control when the muscles use more glucose and the body becomes more sensitive to insulin.   Exercise will also help to prevent and minimize common diabetic complications which include heart problems, high blood pressure, and circulatory deficiencies.

How important is exercise for diabetics?

If you are a diabetic, exercise should be part of your daily routine. You should always exercise at a slow pace and never overdo it.  Also, you  should be sure to exercise around people you know or at a gym, so there will always be people around you in case something goes wrong.  Being a diabetic doesn’t have to hinder your life or your  performance, as exercise for diabetics can help you get your life back on track and heading in the right direction – the healthy direction.

One of the most popular natural remedies for asthma that has become known in recent years is the Buteyko Breathing Method. This is a shallow breathing technique that raises carbon dioxide levels in the smooth muscles of the airways, increasing oxygen uptake.

One study of 60 asthma sufferers found that the Buteyko Breathing Method help sufferers to cut down their use of inhalers by an average of 2 puffs per day. However, it is important to remember that you will still need to carry the inhaler.

Diet as asthma remedy

Other natural remedies focus on diet. In particular, you can help to reduce inflammation in the body (which may be a cause of asthma attacks) by taking the following steps in your diet:

1. Reduce consumption of arachidonic acid, linked to inflammation. Arachidonic acid is found especially in certain animal foods including egg yolks, meat and shellfish. Eating less of these may help to prevent asthma attacks.

2. Reduce uptake of arachidonic acid by increasing intake of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA). These are found in oily fish but most people find it simpler to take an omega-3 supplement capsule.

3. Increase consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes, carrots, apples and leafy vegetables.

Butterbur extract is a substance extracted from the root of a natural plant that has been found to reduce inflammation and reduce use of inhalers by asthma sufferers in one study. However, it has some side effects and should be used with care. These side effects include digestive upsets and headaches.

Butterbur extract should not be taken by pregnant or nursing women, or by people with liver or kidney disease. Whole butterbur root should not be used at all, even to make herbal teas, because the plant contains other substances that are toxic and can cause kidney or liver damage. If you decide to use butterbur, take a commercially prepared and regulated supplement where the anti inflammatory ingredient has been extracted from the root and is offered alone.
