Not Giving Up

tortillapie Not Giving Up

Breakfast this morning was a serving of leftover tamale pie from last night’s dinner. I’ve been eating leftovers for breakfast for as long as I can remember. Food is food, right? This recipe is so easy to put together: prepared polenta, black beans, diced tomatoes, monterey jack cheese, cumin, garlic and salt. Bake and eat.

Lunch was pretty uneventful, a grilled cheese sandwich. I always feel like I could eat like five more. So instead, I eat pineapple.

Pineapple will forever remind me of our family trip to Hawaii when I was 12. My mom was on a pineapple kick after that trip and so now they remind me of her. Mom, remember your pineapple rug?

I’m already feeling hunger pangs for dinner, what are you guys having?

Oh! I was interviewed for Fitbie (an MSN sister site) recently of an article, 10 Weight Loss Bloggers You Should Follow:

fitbieinterview Not Giving Up

I have to admit feeling a little sheepish when these sorts of things come as a result of my blog and no doubt my search engine results. Not that I don’t appreciate them, because it’s kind of cool to show it to my mom and makes me feel validated on some weird level, but I’m aware of my lack of actual consistent weight loss.

I will say that there seems to be two types of weight loss bloggers, those who lose weight, and those that don’t and stop blogging. And while I’ve been tempted to be the latter on more than one occasion, I feel good about my decision to continue sharing my life. Like I said in the interview, “I want other women to know that you can have a loving husband, awesome career, and amazing outfits right now. If someone leaves my blog with hope, that’s really it for me. I want people to see somebody who hasn’t given up.” That is very true, I’m not giving up.

Today starts Lent, are you giving up anything? I’m going to try giving up TV again (I only made it to week five last year!) and continuing with eating only when I’m hungry rule. I slipped a little this weekend (I’m looking at you, smores), so I like the idea of making it through this stretch of time eating only out of true hunger.

New Year, New Look

Welcome to 2011! I have to say I’m so excited for the new year. I don’t specifically know why, but I have a lot of energy and excitement about new adventures and opportunities this year. 2010 was so good to me, and I just feel very good about the direction I’m headed in.

You may notice a new header on my blog. The last one bugged me from the very first day. I wanted something new and threw that one together very quickly. I liked the type and colors, but needed something a little cleaner and focused on my blog goals. So here it is. A photo of me from my Wear it Well Fall 2010 ecourse, a photo of my favorite meal, and a photo of my first 5k bib. Food, Fashion and Fitness.

I’ve also updated my “About” page, which I hope you will check out. It was lonnng overdue. I think I last updated it two years ago. I needed a new mission statement of sorts because I feel like I’ve finally figured out what I want this blog to be and where I want it to take me. I wanted it to explain who I am and where I stand with my health and weight loss efforts as of today. My biggest blogging struggle came from comments expecting me to be like other healthy living bloggers.

And I don’t see myself in that category, at all. I see myself as someone still on this journey. A lot of the healthful lifestyle bloggers are about women who gained some weight during college and then lost it. They also blog about everything they eat. I admire their discipline and hard work and am not at all knocking what they do, but that is not who I am. If you’re looking for those bloggers check out my “inspirational blogs” list and you will find many. They inspire me and I aspire to be more disciplined.

I’m someone who needs to lose 150 lbs to be considered “average weight”, I have been overweight or obese my whole life, I struggle with food addiction and binge eating disorder. I also enjoy  a whole range of foods, I enjoy cooking, shopping locally and organically. AND I love pizza, indian food, mexican food and a whole host of other food items that just aren’t traditional “diet” fare. My goal in the coming year is moderation, not elimination (except for sugar). And I will get there, this is just my journey. I’m not an advocate for anyone or any way of living.

My deepest wish for my blog is that I can inspire other women more like me, who have a lot of weight to lose, who have pain (emotional and physical) when they exercise, who deal with binge eating, who are afraid of who they have become, who fear what they could become. That we can do this, that it is hard, that we can have a wonderful life in the meantime, and that we can love and nurture ourselves the way we truly deserve.

I also wanted to mention that I now have a Facebook (centered around this blog) for anyone that wants to be friends and communicate that way. And I can be found on twitter: @lorriefenn.

And finally, thank you for reading. Thank you for being here for the past four years, commenting and emailing. Sharing your stories with me and rooting me on through this journey. Your kindness and time here are not lost on me and the effort I put into my blog. I hope to bring more of myself to this space this year and am very excited to share with you.

Mangosteen SuperFruit Facts

There is a strong precedent for ‘ super foods’ emerging from the Southern Hemisphere.  Fruits that are meant to not only taste great  but also help improve your health, fruits with amazing health benefits.  They have come in all shapes and sizes, from many sorts of countries.

A few have been able to back up their claims of health benefits, many others not.  One of the newest of such super fruits to emerge is the Mangosteen.  Like the others, many authorities are stating marvellous things about how beneficial the Mangosteen can be to our health.  But what are the real facts?

Mangosteen Facts

The Mangosteen is the fruit of a plant indigenous to the Indonesia region, which is why many people in the Western world have still not heard all about it.  This remoteness from Western research also explains why, till now, no one had made claims about the health benefits of the mangosteen – as till now scientists hadn’t had a chance to research it.

Not that it doesn’t have a ancient history, not at all.  The health benefits of the Mangosteen have been recognised for over 1400 years.  Locals used a dried and pulped version of the fruit plus its rind to make potions and salves as far back as 600AD

The Mangosteen is a small fruit, aproximately the same size as a tangerine.  The rind (   pith) of a Mangosteen is purple and greenish, whilst the inner most pulp is white.  This pulp is prized by locals as a wonderful tasting fruit.

Indeed the English Queen, Victoria (1819 – 1901) is said to have enjoyed the taste of the fruit so much that she offered to give knighthoods on anyone who brought her back more, which is an example of how much it was looked upon even in Victorian Britain!

Mangosteen Health Claims

As the Mangosteen is just recently coming to be seriously researched by researchers there is still much about it that we are still to comprehend .  But initial scrutiny and research has brought a number of pertinent facts about the fruit to our attention.

  • The Mangosteen has more than 40 different types of Xanthones in it, making it the strongest single source of Xanthones known to occur naturally.
  • Xanthones are useful to our health in a many ways, not least acting as a potent anti-inflammatory agent, stopping or reducing swelling.  Extremely useful for the likes of migraine sufferers.
  • Anti-oxidants.  Anti-oxidants are essential to help us battle against free radicals – dangerous molecules that may cause cancer.  Plus they are significant in helping to strengthen our immune system to fight off diverse attacks.
  • Illness.  Many of the impressive number of anti-oxidants pinpointed in the mangosteen are anti-virals and anti-bacteria, helping us to be able to recover from illnesses speedily, and potentially guard against an illness that you would otherwise get.

So however you select to enjoy your mangosteen, whether in  juice, fresh or freeze-dried supplement form you now have an understanding of exactly what it is that you are putting into your body.
