A Couple Important Fitness Myths

The fitness industry is replete with theories, some of which are facts while others are myths. You should separate the facts from myths to ensure that you reach your fitness goals quickly and easily.

In the following article I will tell you about the top two fitness myths. It drives me crazy when I hear things that are obviously (to me anyway) wrong but at the same time they are very commonly heard.

Weight Loss Pills Will Lose Weight For You:

Diet Pills

Different people consume diet pills and loss supplements for different reasons; some do it to lose weight while others take them to ensure that they never gain in the first place.

In either case, if you are not doing anything else for fitness apart from consuming these pills and supplements, you are merely fooling yourself and wasting your money.

Some facts about loss pills and supplements:

a) Even though some diet pills are rich in vitamins and minerals, they are no substitutes for a healthy diet. If you eat only junk foods then these pills alone cannot keep your body healthy, and an unhealthy body cannot be fit.

To ensure permanent fitness, you should eat mostly wholesome fruits and vegetables. These foods, apart from being cheaper than their junk counterparts, are also very nutritious and would keep you fit and healthy all the time.

Plus, being low on calorie content, they won’t make you fat either. Talk about a win-win situation.

b) Many of these diet pills have side effects. That is why most diet pills and supplements are not approved by the FDA.

Whenever you notice those hyped ads about diet pills on your television screen or at the front page of your favorite magazine, make sure to read the “fine print” which contains warnings and disclaimers regarding the usage of such pills.

Basically, if you suffer from any side effect as a result of consuming those drugs, you are on your own.

If You Work Abs, You Will Lose Fat Quickly:

Crunches-SitupsWrong. Losing weight is a function of burning calories, not making your muscles stronger. In fact if you strengthen your ab muscles you will actually have your fat sticking out a bit more.

What you have to do to lose fat quickly is to do cardio and weight workouts, called HIIT workouts. to burn lots of calories and keep your body guessing.

If you keep on doing the same workout day after day, your body soon gets accustomed to it.

When your body gets accustomed to a workout, it wouldn’t burn fat at the same speed as before.

The ideal way to burn fat is to do a variety of workouts; this way, you would not only manage to “confuse” your body about your workout regimen but also be able to burn fat from all parts of the body.

With such a workout regimen, you would have no problems burning fat fast.

Plus, when you try out a variety of workouts and alternate between them, you are unlikely to become bored with your workout routine.

Salad Dinner – Yummy, Healthy, and Very Filling

Quite often on a Sunday night my wife will make a salad with a precooked chicken. After the business of a weekend this seems like a nice healthy way to end it and and easy way to get started for the week ahead.

Today my daughter came grocery shopping with plans for a different kind of chicken salad. This time there were a lot more toppings, and I just wanted to share

Here is The Great Salad Toppers Salad

salad dinnerSo first of all today we just had some fresh chicken breasts that we grilled on the BBQ and cur up to put underneath of the salad

For the salad itself we just mixed spinach and lettuce

Look at all these toppings!

  • Avocado
  • Mandarin Oranges
  • Slivered Almonds
  • Cranberry spiced pecans
  • Walnuts
  • Cranberries
  • Apples (two kinds)
  • Feta Cheese

All of these were easy enough to prepare and pretty easy to pack up again after dinner. We never put Apples in our salad but I am sure we will start now as the crunchiness is a fantastic way to just get a little more flavor and texture to the salad

Dirty Air – Exercising and Pollution

Healthday News had this article on urban exercise based on a report by the The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention..

Your intentions may be good, but exercising outdoors in a city may be riskier than you think, one expert says.

Exercise Issues In Cities

Outdoor activity can cause serious damage to a person’s health because of elevated air pollution levels. Those especially at risk are those who exercise by running, bicycling or skating.

air pollutionAccording to Dr. Joseph T. Cooke, associate professor of clinical medicine and patient safety officer at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, the danger lies in the components of air pollution.

The three main culprits are fine particulate matter, (the mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air), ozone (a gas composed of three oxygen atoms) and carbon monoxide.

These components of air pollution irritate the lungs, making it harder to breathe and worsening problems initially caused by asthma, bronchitis, cardiopulmonary maladies, and emphysema.

“The pollutants affect the lungs by causing inflammation or irritation of the airway lining,” Cooke explained in a prepared statement. “More mucus and phlegm is produced, and small muscles surrounding the airway respond by squeezing down. The work of breathing increases, and it becomes more difficult to get oxygen into the body,” he said.

The three pollutants are located in cities around the world. Fine particulates are emitted from the diesel engines of buses and trucks. Carbon monoxide arises from cigarette smoke and automobile exhaust, and it has the ability to force oxygen out of a person’s circulatory system.

For those exercising, overexposure to carbon monoxide can lead to dizziness, confusion, headaches and dangerously high body temperatures. Ozone, which is the largest component of smog in cities, adversely affects breathing patterns and decreases the size of airways, making the lungs more resistant to oxygen.

For those determined to work out outdoors, Cooke offered the following tips:

  • Do not run on or near roads where there is heavy truck or bus traffic.
  • Work out in the early morning or later in the evening.
  • Exercise indoors if possible.

If you experience any difficulty breathing, stop exercising immediately and see a doctor.

Dirty air is definitely an issue that is becoming worse every year in most major cities.

The one strange thing I have run across though is that the city of Los Angeles, which used to be among the most polluted cities, is actually better and much less polluted now than it was 20 years ago
