Colonoscopy Tomorrow – Not for me

My wife, Michelle,  has been having a lot of stomach problems over the last few months and diarrhea very often. The problem tends to be in the afternoon with my wife having terrible stomach cramps most afternoons.

We have tried lots of stuff including trying probiotics in case it was a bacteria problem, blood tests, urine test, poo testing. Lots of tests and lots of questioning on both my wife and I on what could be causing these problems. We have looked all over her diet and exercise program thinking that this could be a milk allergy or gluten allergy but after taking these out we realized that my wife may have a problem with lactose in milk and other dairy products so she took all milk related products out of her diet, Gluten tests showed that was really not an issue.

So now we are getting ready for the next test. Tomorrow morning my wife is going in for a Colonoscopy to see if there is some kind of problem with her intestines, colon, or bladder. This is not a comfortable test to get ready for and probably not comfortable tomorrow either, we will see about that.

Getting Ready for a Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy Tomorrow Not for me

Michelle and the Kids

So the prep for the Colonoscopy started a few days ago. Michelle had to drop her daily aspirin (she takes this for blood clot issues she had a few years ago) on Thursday which was 5 days before and anti-inflammatory 3 days before. Now this weekend Michelle had to go to low fiber diet for three days and now today after breakfast no solid foods at all.

For the Colonoscopy tomorrow my wife has to have a completely clear colon so that the camera can see the walls of the colon very clearly and with no obstructions this means that Michelle needs to completely flush her colon for tomorrow morning. To clear the colon she had to take Ducolax pills on Saturday and Sunday nights and then today she needs to take Pico Salax twice tonight and drink 12-16 cups of water between 5pm and midnight. Right now the poor girl is alternating floating from all the water and sitting on the toilet.

I am looking forward to finding out tomorrow if we can get an answer to my wifes problems. She has never had any kind of stomach problems like this and we are both confused as it doesn’t make any sense to either of us. As I am sure you know from my posts here I find confidence within myself that I can find the answers to any health and fitness problems so this last few months have driven me crazy.

I will post tomorrow if we find out anything on this, or probably any news actually.

Thanksgiving in Canada

Today it was my Thanksgiving dinner. Here in Canada we have Thanksgiving in October, I know our southern neighbors have Thanksgiving in November we just get to see the football scores from work that day.

Two things that I noticed at dinner today, we had the big spread with lots of people and even more food. We of course have a couple of drinks before dinner, graze for a while rest for a while and then have pie. This is probably the worst way to eat as the meal takes a few hours and is thousands of calories.

My wife had no food before dinner and just drank water, she had a little of everything at dinner and then after dinner had a fork full of my pie and that was it. On the way home she was saying how great all the food was while I was complaining about how much I had to eat this afternoon and evening. I bet Michelle also sleeps better tonight and feels better tomorrow morning as well.

Some people have until tomorrow to think about this and the rest of you do not have to worry about it until next month.

I Spent the Day Making Cake

We made it through our first week of 2011!  I got caught up in being super productive (as usual this time of year) that by Wednesday I was totally burned out. There are only so many things that I can truly get done in a day. That said, I’m pleased with everything that I did manage to get done last week. I kept track of it all:

I took better care of my skin, I flossed daily, I didn’t eat sugar, I tackled the laundry, I finished a few freelance projects, I finished jewelry orders, I cleaned the house, I held the Floyd Creative Collective meeting at my house and set up a blog for that, I wrote articles, and updated my blog.

Things I didn’t do…exercise! I wrote that whole post about exercise excuses right in the midst of one big one: Josh was sick and I was trying to tackle a 100+ to-do list. The week before I was sick and no one was exercising. And this week was no different. And I’m feeling the results of it.

So this week, I’m scheduling exercise. And I’m starting today with a visit with Billy Blanks and continuing tomorrow morning with Julian.

I do think it’s funny that after my sugar video-which by the way- thank you for watching and leaving such encouraging/thoughtful/kind comments- I spent the day making this:

The hardest part about baking and not eating sugar is taste-testing. How would I know the cake wasn’t too dry or the icing was too buttery? I used my other senses. I felt the icing and it’s consistency and smelled the cake. It seemed to work.

This isn’t the best looking cake, but I’m proud of it nonetheless. Mainly because it speaks to my approach to life lately- just dive in. I have never (ever) made an iced cake or worked with fondant, but I knew I didn’t want to just put plastic figurines on the cake. I was up for the challenge. I marched right into Michaels, bought a cake decorating kit and white fondant.

There was a slight hesitation that it would be a total disaster, but I went in with gusto and pretty darn proud of the results. I guess the lesson here, if there is one, is that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. Even if it is daunting, new, uncomfortable and scary- and when I become fearless of the outcome- really good things can happen.

Finding life lessons in cake decorating? That’s what I do! Have you surprised yourself lately? I’d love to hear about it.
