Questions to ask before you leave a hospital

There are many things that you need to know when you leave a hospital after a surgery. I ran into this first hand last week after my dad has a heart attack and then an angioplasty and my mom took him from the hospital with almost no information.

That kind of thing should never happen.

I speak of all this not just a fitness guy, but as someone that has had to eal with a sick daughter with kidnet disease, as well as a very jarring situation with my dad having a heart attack and angioplasty just a few weeks back. Sometimes we get fantastic information from the doctors, nurnses and other health care staff, sometimes not. Most importantly though we need to be very careful with the way that we take in information. sometimes we miss details given to us and sometimes the health care professionals think that we are aware of certain things when in fact we are not.

First of all the hospital staff including nurses, doctors and other health care workers have a head full of knowledge that you just have to ask the right questions to the right people.

Right after leaving the hospital

doctorsRight after you leave the hospital what do you need to know. Are there any special instructions for that first night?
Are there any medications needed? Some medication may need to be taken that first day but some many can wait.

Are there any dietary restrictions? How about water and food intake over the first 24 hours. Often there are water restirctions or a need for water and fasting or not.

How about baths, heat or ice packs? Are these needed, can you pick them up on the way home from the hospital or wait?

The initial day home from a hospital can be difficult so it is important to know what distractions you can get rid of. The last thing you want to do in those first 24 hours is to be running out to the store to buy things, fill prescriptions, get food, or any other things that can just wait a day.

After 24 hours – Through the first week out of the hospital

As any kind of caregiver you need to make sure that you are very clear on the situation above. You need to know things like dietary restrictions going forward, water and liquids, and then all the crazy things that certain surgeries can bring on. You may need to have multiple medications to track and exercise considerations.

As far as medications. How many and how often. It is important to have a schedule of exactly what has to be taken when and any interactions between the medications. You can get this information from a pharmacist or the doctor and in these cases do not trust your memory. Write everything down. Another problem with medications is the side effects.

Make sure that you know what the side effects can be and what to watch out for. Most people do not show side effects but really the fact is that you will be dealing with medications that are not common to you or your patient so you need to be aware if there is an allergy or side effect showing up.

Finally, as far as I am concerned, most medications are for acute symptoms. Right after a trauma or a surgery you need to take a few things like pain killers, blood thinners, anticoagulants, and anti-inflammatories that you should be able to drop once healing has taken place. Please under no circumstances should you make these decisions on your own, but instead consult with the doctors and other staff that you have access to so that the decisions are not going to set you any steps back in the recovery process.

Food, Drink, and Exercise. What you take in an what you do in the days after surgery and recovering from these often has a bigger effect on the outcome and recovery than anyone really suspects. The fact is that your body will heal with what you eat and drink and what you do for exercise is really important.

Critical changes to your diet and exercise are important if you want to heal or support those healing so be sure to be very aware of what is prescribed for in the area of food and restrictions for foods or other things like sodium. Also after a stay in the hospital it can be very difficult to get a lot of exercise but exercise is critical to recovery. In my dads case after his heart attack we of course had no idea how much exercise a moderately physical guy should get afterwards so it is important to talk to the doctor and nurses to see what they have to say.

Permanent changes are often needed after hospital stays. A car accident, heart attack, or other major life event is just that, a major life event and may mean that you have to make permanent changes. You have to look at diet, exercise, ongoing health care, and even lifelong habits may need to change.

How to Create an Abundance Mindset

Doesn’t it always seem like some people have no problem achieving success while others just can’t seem to catch a break? There are many things that go into success that include knowledge, skill, preparation, and execution but having an abundance mindset really helps.

What is an Abundance Mindset?

How to Create an Abundance MindsetAn abundance mindset simply means that when you look at a situation you see the opportunity possible and not the fear of not being able to get what you want. Actually it is a bit more than that. The idea is that you can have anything you want, there are no limits except for a lack of imagination and the choices that you have not yet made.

I think that these ideas have been around for a long time but the movie and book “The Secret” really made abundance thinking more mainstream. Be clear though that people like Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, and Louise Hey have been talking up abundance thinking for at least 20 years and probably longer.

There tends to be two camps as far as creating an abundance mindset goes. There are people that understand the concept and work towards it and there are others that look at it as a greedy outlook by some new age folks. I hope to dispell that myth here.

Also I don’t really look at abundance as money really but lifestyle. If I have abundance of money but it takes me 18 hours a day to make it then my family, health, relationships, and lifestyle all suffer. Think about it, what would life me like if you were the fittest person that you knew AND your relationship with your spouse was the best of anyone that you knew as well? And this is just looking within your small group of friends and the people around you!

How Do I Get Started Creating an Abundance Mindset

Be willing to give always, don’t hold back the things that you have thinking that you need them including time, things, and money. Giving is incredibly important and I never realized this. Everything that we have was somehow given to us. Our homes, jobs, education, spouses love, kids, health, and everything else. Of course you had to work for most of those things as well but there was some kind of transaction that made each of them happen and this will always be the way. so remember that holding tight will lead to lack, and giving will lead to abundance

I think that most people see this completely wrong when they hear it. I would not say take out a loan from the bank and then throw the money into the street or give it all away to the first person that you see, this is just not smart. Instead think of everything you have as something that you can invest in people that you come across to help them and in turn this will help you.

Remember that right now is an instant in time that has been brought to you by all of your decisions in the past and that the future is unwritten. There is no reason to think that what you have gotten up until now were the only choices but instead were the choices that you made so far. If you adopt a mindset that anything is possible is will alter how you make decisions in the future.

Appreciate everything around you. Have gratitude for all that has been given to you and everything that you have earned. The best way to do this is to make sure that you have a list of things that you are grateful for. We sometimes remember a few things that we are greateful for but most of the time we forget those great things in our lives and in our worst times of course it seems that there is nothing to be grateful for so we just spiral down and feel bad about everything.

Get organized. When you are disorganized you don’t know what you have, what you need, and what you want. Organization means really that we know what we have and where it is in the simplest way. We are all disorganized I feel. Either you aren’t doing anything or you are scrambling trying to finish projects and searching for that not, paper, or email that you made just last week. I am great for keeping all the info I need but terrible for organizing it so I have lot of work to do in this area myself.

Look for ways that you can help others in every situation that you see others. This will lead to other people seeing that you are always trying to help and any situations where there is a chance of I want, you can’t have is dulled. You will always have a better chance to create situations that help everyone involved. This can happen at work, at home, anywhere that you are dealing with other people.

Watch out for what you love – Do you love money, things, and owning? This can be a problem as it will make you scared of losing. We learn when we are young that if you love something then let it go and if it comes back it is really yours. Well this is in fact true. If you hold onto money or belongings too tightly then you don’t get a chance to see what you would have without them. We do this all the time with some things like food or bottles for the scouts. things that don’t mean much but when it comes to your car or house you hold tight. Think about this and why.

Rely on learning from the best in every field. There are fantastic people with knowledge that can help you in any single part of your life. Trainers for fitness, teachers for using money better, lifestyle gurus, and those spiritual teachers that you wither listen to or ignore. Too often our mindset it based on what we know instead of what others can easily teach us. Make sure that you are always learning and this will break down that barriers in life that stop you and limit your beliefs of what is possible.

Plan abundance in all parts of your life – Just what do you want? If you have your goals for life out there, the things you are working towards, the dreams you have, and the life you want to live, then it is far easier to plan what you can give for that, and what you will need to sacrifice to others for that dream. Remember that as you give what you have to others it frees them up to give you what you want and need.

Create Abundance in Your Life Starting Today

I really think that creating an abundance mindset is something that every successful person has done but also is something that we can all create for ourselves as well. We tend to live in narrow self imposed lives that have limits that we have created and these limits are important to break away from so that we can live to our greatest potential. 25 years ago I thought the greatest thing would be to become an accountant, 20 years ago I thought that I would always be a Realtor,  and for the last 15 years I have been a computer nerd but I am always excited to know that there is always more in life coming that I still can’t see today.

So change the way you look at life, give any time you can, stop setting limits on your future, and make that gratitude journal of all the things your are thankful for today and add to it tomorrow.

Does Fiber Help Lose Weight?

Fiber – we can’t digest it and it provides us with no calories or nutrients, yet we know that it’s good for us and most of us need more. What is it exactly, and what is it about fiber that makes it so healthy for us?

What is Fiber?

Fiber is simply the part of the plant foods we eat that we aren’t able to break down in our digestive systems. There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber will form a gel when dissolved in water. This type of fiber will slow down the rate of your digestion, leaving you feeling fuller for longer, and off of fewer calories, too! Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve, instead, passing through your digestive tract intact. It fills you up and “scrubs out” your insides by collecting toxins and fats, and taking them out when it passes.

You shouldn’t focus on getting specific amounts of any one type of fiber. Eating a healthy and varied diet will take care of that for you. The only thing you should be trying to do to get more fiber is eat healthier foods on a consistent basis.

Does Fiber Help Lose Weight?

Fiber affects weight loss because of the effect it has on our sense of hunger. Your feelings of hunger are controlled by many things, including the amounts of carbs, fat, protein, water and fiber that are present in the things you eat. Eating healthy amounts of an appropriate mix of these foods will eliminate excess hunger and cravings.

Did you know that people eat basically the same amount of food each day. There aren’t usually any drastic changes in the amount people eat from day to day – aside from special occasions that may call for pigging out, that is. When you replace some of the foods you eat with foods that are high in fiber, you’re doing one of the best things you can for weight loss. After all, fiber adds no calories to your diet and most fiber rich foods have ver y little calories compared to other foods of the same weight or volume. It helps you feel full faster, and for longer periods of time. It also absorbs fat, leaving less of it for your body to digest. And most fiber rich foods require you to chew more because of their texture, and this simple act of slowing the rate at which you eat is the perfect way to avoid overeating.

Fiber Helps Blood Sugar

Plus it’s good for your blood sugar. You may think that’s something only diabetics would be concerned with, but everyone – especially those trying to lose weight – should be aware of the consequences of consuming sugar. When you eat sugar or foods like refined carbohydrates that turn into blood sugar quickly, your pancreas is signaled to release insulin. When the body is flooded with insulin, your brain thinks you have more than enough energy (calories) to keep you going, so it shuts off the fat burning systems in your body. Plus, the spike in insulin that occurs after eating sugar or refined carbs is followed by a big dip in insulin levels, leaving your body exhausted and craving more sugar and calories. It can quickly turn into a vicious cycle that will leave you hunting for candy bars when you should be working out.

So, now you know exactly why you should be getting more fiber, and you’re ready to start. Before you go doing anything drastic, though, you need to know how to use fiber safely. Even though it’s extremely healthy for you, it’s never a wise move to overdo anything. Too much fiber can prevent your body from absorbing nutrients or utilizing medications. Upping your dosage too quickly can lead to uncomfortable gas and possibly constipation.

The best way to get your fiber is to eat more plant based foods. Sure it’s not as convenient as those juice flavored fiber supplements you mix with water, but it’s better because supplements don’t keep you feeling as full as food sources of fiber do. Plus food sources that are high in fiber are usually high in vitamins, minerals and nutrients that will indirectly assist your body with fat burning.

Anytime you eat fiber you should be drinking lots of water to go along with it. This will keep your stools comfortably soft and help even more with weight loss, being that water is right up there with fiber when it comes to making you feel full and satisfied.

Fiber is an essential part of a healthy weight loss regimen, and most people don’t eat enough, especially with the prevalence of convenient foods. Get more fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains in your diet and you’ll notice you have less room in your stomach for the unhealthy stuff. Your weight will start dropping and you’ll feel a lot better, too.
