Mental Notes

I woke up yesterday and enjoyed a small slice of leftover quiche with a glass of orange juice. A total of 395 calories. For a mid-morning snack I had an orange juice frozen pop (Josh wanted me to mention that he made these all by himself- a tricky method of pouring orange juice in a popsicle mold) at 55 calories For lunch I had a whole wheat flat bread panini with three slices of center cut bacon, 1/2 oz. cheddar cheese, tomato and mixed greens stuffed inside. This was incredible! So satisfying and only 395 calories. Snack: 1 serving nut and rice crackers with one wedge of laughing cow cheese: 165 calories 1/2 serving cashews- 80 calories Bowl of Indian lentils (and chickpeas) with onion and a cup of rice- about 550-600 calories Another orange pop: 55 calories Glucosamine chews: 70 calories

Total calories for the day: 1,765

I’ve been making some mental notes this week for myself, for future reference.

I’m still eating what I enjoy and love to eat. I’m full and satisfied with my choices. I’m not stuffed, uncomfortable or bloated- I’m just full.

Do it anyway. I feel my mental crazies picking up and I hear myself thinking “what if I continue to eat like this and stop losing weight?” Obviously I have no clue as to how the body loses weight.  I’m reminding myself of this: I’m eating significantly less food which will result in weight loss, trust in the process and do it anyway. I guess deep down I’m afraid I will get to a point where I weigh a lot less and in order to maintain that weight I have to eat much less than I am now. That is a very long bridge from now and I will deal with it when I get there. I’m finding that this fear of hunger, future hunger is sabotaging. As crazy as it seems (after typing it out) I’ve noticed a pattern of thoughts where I think “I can never eat this little, forget it” and before I even give myself a chance I give up. I give up out of fear of what doesn’t exist. I’m acknowledging this and continuing.

Getting by on less. I think the biggest part of losing weight for those of us who have been overeating or binging for so long is letting it go. Letting go of too much, letting go of stuffing, letting go of mindless eating. I think that is why Atkins is so appealing, you can eat as much meat and vegetables as you want. There is a safety net. I’m finding slowly (very slowly) that the desire to overeat is less appealing than the desire to feel healthy and comfortable. One feels good for about 10 minutes, and leaves me feeling like crap. The other causes about 10 minutes of being uncomfortable (putting the fork down) and hours, if not a lifetime of feeling much better.

The scale is moving. Even after four days, I’m seeing results that I wasn’t seeing with exercise alone. This is very encouraging. I keep telling myself: you’re doing what you need to do to reach your goals. And I am, and I’m allowing myself to trust in that.

************ We’re headed off to DC tomorrow morning for a weekend extravaganza with the blog girls. Lots of food, sight seeing and other nutty things. I will still take photos of my food while I’m gone, eat what I enjoy, yet remain mindful of not over-stuffing myself.

Dear April

My last entry accidentally got deleted. This has happened maybe twice since I started blogging four years ago and I think it happened when the server updated and it got lost. So I apologize for that, it wasn’t intentional, especially since it took me forever to write and now I have no interest in writing it again.

It’s April! I have so many plans and goals for this month that I’m very excited about. But first, I have some updates:

No Sugar. It’s been three months without sugar. I loosely say no sugar. I eat sugar in other forms such as fruit, natural sugars (I’ve added honey back in), and I will add sugar to a Vietnamese or Thai dish if it calls for it. It has been hard…some days harder than others. Right now I have cake and cookies in my house. I plan to give them away. It’s nice to not have them haunt me. I have sugar in the house, and I still bake. My treats are in the form of my glucosamine “candies”, Izze drinks, all natural fruit jam on toast/oatmeal/yogurt, and fruit smoothies. I’ve been hesitant to tell people I’m not eating sugar, in fact, if you don’t read this blog you probably don’t know.

I don’t want to be watched and I don’t want “sugar-free” to be confused with carb-free or have people think “oh she says no to ice cream, but yes to pizza! bah!” indeed so. This sugar-free thing is for cakes, cookies, ice cream…obvious sugar. It’s not a dietary guideline, it’s just me trying to get rid of something I have a hard time not overeating. I like rules.

No TV. I have to admit I’ve gone almost five weeks without my regular rotation of TV watching and will confess I’ve been watching Mad Men on DVD this past week (season four just came out). Not a ton, and not like before when I get obsessed and watch five in one sitting. But, considerably less. I’ve noticed that I don’t miss TV in the mindless sort of way of passing time or procrastinating- I can always find ways to fill my time with work. However- I’ve come to realize that watching an episode of a good show with Josh is a treat for a days worth of work. We both work from home and it’s a nice way to turn off from work and relax together.

Strength Training. Can I just say that I love strength training? I’ve been doing it off and on for almost five years now and it’s very rewarding. We picked it back up in January and I’m lifting weights that are 10-30 pounds heavier than I was then. We make notes during each session- can we increase the weight or stay the same. On February 3rd I could only do 80lbs. on the pull down machine (for arms, back and shoulders) and said I couldn’t do more.

Today I was able to pull down 120 lbs. That’s a 40 lb. increase in strength, meaning that I’m gaining muscle. This is the same for almost all of the machines I do. Did you know that for every pound of muscle you gain, your body burns 50 extra resting calories? Gaining 10 lbs. of muscle is 500 extra calories burned a day! I love that and I can tell that it is one reason that I’ve not gained any weight since January.

Insanity. This week marks the 12th week of Insanity! I’ve lost 12-15lbs (it’s goes up and down) so far. I just can’t believe we’ve stuck with it for so long. We are already in our second rotation. I will admit that the past couple of weeks have been harder, we’ve done at least three workouts a week instead of our usual six. So we are getting back on track with six workouts this week.

April plans and goals:

The next two months (and most of summer) are going to be pretty hectic. I really need to step up my organization and will need continued exercise and eating well if I’m going to stay on top of everything. Spring marks the beginning of  of jewelry shows and my freelance design business is growing so I can use all the energy I can get.

I’m stepping up my game this month. I’m dedicated to counting calories and keeping a food journal. My goal it to lose 10-12 pounds this month with continued exercise and food tracking. I have no interest (as usual) in doing this by eating “diet” food, my method is to eat less, control portions, eat from home as much as possible and enjoy the food I’m eating.

Continuing with 5 days of the Insanity Workout with one day of strength. We may add yoga and running back in if the spirits moves us. And speaking of us… Josh is wearing all of his jeans now. All of the jeans that just a month ago would too tight. I am still steadily wearing a size 24/22. I’d love to be in a 20/18 by mid to late summer.

Glucosamine with Chondroitin

Glucosamine with ChondroitinGlucosamine with Chondroitin is an excellent supplement for joint health. Its function is to draw fluid into the joint and lubricate it. Please check with your doctor if you are currently on any medications before taking it.

Glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) occur naturally in the body. The glucosamine used in supplements is typically derived from the shells of crabs although a corn source is also available.

Glucosamine is available in a variety of chemical forms, such as glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate. These vary in terms of the amount of actual glucosamine available for use in the body from an equal weight of each form (See ConsumerTipâ„¢ for Glucosamine for more information).

Chondroitin sulfate is generally derived from cow cartilage, but porcine (pig) and even chicken cartilage has been used and algae are another potential source. MSM is synthetically produced.

What Glucosamine and Chondroitin does

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplements are used to slow the progression of osteoarthritis the deterioration of cartilage between joint bones and to reduce the associated pain. Glucosamine is thought to promote the formation and repair of cartilage. Chondroitin is believed to promote water retention and elasticity in cartilage and inhibit enzymes that break down cartilage. In veterinary medicine, glucosamine and chondroitin, often in combination, are commonly used in the treatment of degenerative joint disease typically in older dogs and cats as well as in horses.

What MSM does for you Joints

MSM is used primarily for treating pain associated with osteoarthritis and has been proposed for treating other conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation of the bladder wall (interstitial cystitis), snoring, muscle spasm, and cancer.

All of these uses for MSM, including those for arthritis, are based on limited research, so its effectiveness hasn’t been well established.

Many additional claims are found on MSM products, including skin-softening and nail-strengthening effects, but none of these are well supported by research. As a veterinary medicine, MSM is used to treat muscle and tendon soreness and inflammation in horses.

The mechanism by which MSM may work isn’t well understood, although it’s known to contribute sulfur to the body, which can then be used to synthesize certain amino acids (building blocks for proteins), and it can act as an antioxidant. MSM is also used in veterinary medicine to treat pain and inflammation, but its effectiveness has not been well studied.
