Multi Vitamins May Reduce Cancer Risk in Men

Multi Vitamins May Reduce Cancer Risk in Men

A huge study just took place and was reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association on the affect of multivitamins and cancer in men. In the study they looked at a huge number of male doctors and came up with some good although vague results.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School Study

Scientists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School recruited nearly 15,000 male physicians, 50 years or older, and followed them for more than a decade.  Half took the daily multivitamin Centrum Silver; the others took a placebo.

Men in the vitamin group had a modest 8% reduction in cancer cases compared to the others.

“This study suggests, at least for men, that there might be benefits to taking multivitamins in terms of cancer,” study author Dr. John Michael Gaziano said in a press release. He is the chief of the Division of Aging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“Overall the study provides the first very nice piece of evidence that well-balanced – not overdose, not mega dose – combination of vitamins and minerals seems to have an effect at preventing cancer,” said Dr. Boris Pasche, director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “But more research is needed to validate this.”

The researchers were not able to determine which types of cancers might be prevented when taking the vitamins.

They are also not sure that the results will be seen in other groups of people such as women or smokers. The men in this study were generally healthy physicians, not overweight or obese and most were non-smokers.

“It will be difficult to make generalizations to the broad public from this one study, but I was impressed by the data,” said Dr. Ernest Hawk, vice president and division head for the Division of Cancer Prevention Population Sciences at MD Anderson Center in Houston, Texas.

Conflicting Vitamin Studies

Back when the study began in 1997, most experts thought taking a vitamin would be beneficial to our health. But in the subsequent years, many scientists were alarmed by evidence suggesting potential harm from vitamin use. Newer studies found vitamin supplements didn’t reduce the risk of cancer, and, in some cases, raised the risk of men and women developing cancer.

This latest study may once again lead experts to re-visit the issue.  Pasche and Hawk, who did not participate in the research, said they are encouraged that after 10 years of study researchers did not see an increase in lung, colorectal, prostate and other cancers, but rather a modest decline in overall cancer cases.

My Recommendations on Multivitamins?

I am a big fan of taking multivitamins. There may be conflicting studies but I feel that if we are deficient in any vitamin or mineral it will definitely affect our health. There is no way that we can substitute multivitamins for food but at least we can enhance our diet just in case.

Whether you do take multivitamins or not you can enhance your diet just by getting rid of a lot of the foods that you are eating, getting rid of processed foods, and replace those foods with fruits and vegetables instead.

Vitamins and your health | vitamins and health

Vitamins are a little controversial as there are two sides to an argument as to whether our diets in North America have enough nutrients or not.

I eat what I think is a full diet of the good food that I need but still am not sure as to weather I eat all the vitamins and minerals necessary to stay healthy and to allow myself to rebuild my body from the environment and my daily exercise so I take some Vitamins.

Here is what I take:
2 multivitamin pills per day one in the morning and one in the evening
1 calcium pill in the evening with dinner
1 omega 3-6-9 in the evening with dinner

This may seem to some as overkill but I know that I have always felt better day in and day our when I am remembering to take multivitamins.

There are a few things to look for in a multivitamin that I always look for myself. The first thing is looking for B vitamins; B vitamins are good for combating stress to the body so I find they are important. In a multi you will find that the B vitamins are usually 2-3 milligrams as they are more expensive to produce and most companies minimize their costs by keeping the amount of this essential vitamin down. Look through all of the multi vitamins in the stores nearby for B vitamins in the 40-50 milligram range instead but still be aware of the price that you are paying.

I try also to stay away from the health food and nutrition stores as the vitamins that they sell are a lot more expensive and I am not sure that they are worth it, so I usually just go to the local grocery store or pharmacy and look there.

Among the other vitamins that I take Calcium I take as I am not sure that I am taking in enough and my wife worries about osteoporosis and who would really want brittle bones anyway. I take the Omega vitamins as they are good for your heart. Also be aware of antioxidants, these are vitamins Beta Carotene (Vitamin A), C, and E are thought to slow down the aging process by removing free radicals from your body.

Although I may be a little aggressive with my vitamin intake compared to some people it seems to me good prevention to at least take a multivitamin once a day and to try to keep up with nutritional info as you see it in the news.

Best Vitamin Posts of 2010

I wrote a series of posts this year on vitamins. I tried to include all the main vitamins and minerals. This was a project that I had thought about for a couple of years and I finally put it all together this year.

In these posts I included what we need these vitamins for, what are the sources of these vitamins, and the amount and toxicity levels for each of the vitamins:

Vitamin A – is important for skin and eyesite. Vitamin A is also an antioxidant and helps your immune system

Vitamin B – These are the classic vitamins for antioxidants and are supposed to be very helpful for combatting stress. Watch out for your multi vitamins as they tend to be very low in B vitamins since they are kind of expensive to produce

Vitamin B3 – Niacin is one of the B vitamins most important for energy as it converts carbs into glucose and glycogen

Vitamin C – is a water-soluble vitamin, which is necessary in the body to form collagen in bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels and aids in the absorption of iron.

Vitamin D – This is a vitamin that we get primarily from sunlight and most people are very deficient in this vitamin. I have written lots on Vitamin D deficiency and this article will help you understand the importance of vitamin D

Vitamin E – Helps to fight cholesterol, cancer, and your skin as well as tissues and internal organs. You get Vitamin E from green leafy veggies as well as other places

Vitamin K – Vitamin K is necessary for normal clotting of blood in humans. Specifically, vitamin K is required for the liver to make factors that are necessary for blood to properly clot

Zinc – Helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses. The body also needs zinc to make proteins and DNA, the genetic material in all cells

Calcium – Calcium is required for muscle contraction, blood vessel expansion and contraction, secretion of hormones and enzymes, and transmitting impulses throughout the nervous system

Chromium – Chromium is known to enhance the action of insulin, a hormone critical to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in the body. Chromium also appears to be directly involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, but more research is needed to determine the full range of its roles in the body.

I think that these vitamins and minerals are important to know about and you can be tested for deficiencies and even though some may fight me on this I think it is important to take supplements of these as a precaution to make sure that you do not become deficient
