What I told a Buddy Looking to Lose Some Weight

One of my buddies at work is trying to get ready for baseball season and he is really not in very good shape right now. Last week he told me that he wanted to lose 20 pounds for baseball season and asked for some advice.

Obviously I have a page on that….

http://www.fitnesstipsforlife.com/how-to-lose-20-pounds-in-a-month.html

That goal is a bit tough for anyone. Doctors say you should only try to lose a pound or two a week but sometimes you get excited and quest for more.

But more importantly than having that grand goal we talked about a few other things. I believe that when you are making changes you want to be all in but you don’t want to hurt yourself or feel like you failed if you get hurt. Biggest Loser is a TV show not a lifestyle choice.

So this is what I told him, as well as that article.

1. Stretch lots – Stretching helps your flexibility and stops you from getting sore
2. Drink enough water to drown you – This will give you a lot of energy and when you sweat a lot you won’t feel sick from dehydration
3. Don’t sacrifice too much – If all you are eating is brocolli and chicken breasts and exercising 3 hours a day then after a few days you will give up. Instead make the right moves. East better, cut back on the junk and alcohol, and exercise a little bit every day

Remember the best road to real success is to make consistent and daily moves towards your goals.

PlanetBox Lovin’

Small blog hiatus is over! Sometimes I just need a break from talking about what I’m eating and doing and just do. Fellow bloggers, am I alone here?

I’ve been making a real effort to spend more time outside. It’s crazy, but I can go days and days and never step outside. It just makes me feel unbalanced, so I bought this little bistro table for $20 at one of those discount/family dollar stores because I was desperate and live 35 minutes from anywhere else. And I love it! It’s real glass and metal and a perfect table for two.

We’ve started walking/wogging in the neighborhood in the evenings again. My loop is a quarter mile and I find that I can do about seven or eight loops in an hour by wallking/jogging. It feels good to be outside again, and humbling to feel like I’m starting over again with physical activity.

I’ve been eating things like homemade hummus in cucumber cups and topped with paprika. So refreshing and surprisingly filling.

Rediscovering my love for egg and cheese sandwiches. One of these keeps me full for hours and they also prevent me from splurging on my fast food biscuit cravings.

My new favorite chicken recipe is so easy! Roll chicken breasts or thighs in jerk seasoning, sprinkle with sea salt and drizzle with honey and olive oil. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes (or until done).

I finally broke down and purchased a PlanetBox and it’s a-mazing! I love that everything is portioned out and it feels kind of creative putting these meals together. I also like that I can snack out of it throughout the day to stay full. I calculated the calories in the box and it came to about 400. This box includes a strawberries, homemade granola cookie, spinach salad with peppers and almonds, a small bunch of homemade dark chocolate biscotti, whole wheat pasta salad with feta and tomatoes, and a chicken sausage.

I took this little turtle out on the deck. Yes, this happened. Yes, he has a pink leash. I can’t make this stuff up.

And working on keeping this birthday orchid alive! Which is very little work at all (three ice cubes a week!). I’ve always wanted an orchid, they are such pretty, intricate little flowers.

And…

I’m down 15 pounds! Not gonna lie, my weight spiked up during birthday week (and seemingly march in general) or I’d be down more, but I’m down again and heading straight toward the -20 pound point! My paints are loose!

It Chooses You

Good morning! Did you guys get any snow yesterday? So far we just have a dusting, it’s mostly cold and windy. Is it bad that I’m hoping for at least one big snow this winter?

Yesterday’s breakfast was so good. I had one of Jeanne’s eggs fried in butter, a couple of slices of peach ham, a clementine and a small slice of banana bread. I ended up not eating more than a bite of the banana bread because I got overzealous with reheating it in the microwave. I think a loaf of banana bread is in my future.

Lunch was really late in the day so I kept it small. A shared chicken burrito, half of an avocado, and salsa.

Dinner took forever to cook, but it was so worth it. I made tandoori chicken burgers with yogurt cucumber sauce and naan. I topped the burgers with cucumber, red onion and cilantro. It was amazing. The chicken patties were tender and had a lot of Indian spice flavor to them. I also really liked the cumin in the cucumber sauce.

I didn’t get a good photo of the burgers because it was 9pm and I didn’t feel like pulling out the natural lights, but these were amazing. I’ll definitely be making them again. You can find the recipe for the tandoori chicken burgers here. The only difference for me was the chicken. I used whole chicken breasts and ground them up in the food processor with the spices. The naan recipe is here.

I did not exercise yesterday and can tell it’s going to be hard at first to get back into the swing of things. I woke up early to exercise and then waited for Josh and then just kept putting it off until we were both too tired. I think honestly we were both excited to get back to work and have a normal day that it took second seat to everything else. No excuses today though.

I’m almost done reading It Chooses You by Miranda July. Oh my. It’s so very interested and surprisingly sad and deep. Miranda’s comments about life, time and death feel so familiar to what goes on in my own head that it’s comforting to read the  words from someone else. While writing or trying to write a screen play she decides to seek out the people from the LA Penny Saver for interviews. What she finds is a whole lot of crazy in a world that exists without the internet.
