What Is Water Weight?

Going on a weight loss journey can seem overwhelming for the total beginner, with the amount of usually foreign jargon suddenly having to become an important part of life. One of the most used terms with regards to weight loss is probably water weight. But really, what is this water weight everybody keeps talking about? Well, you’re about to find out.

You probably already know this, but our body is made up of mostly water. All our bodily cells contain stored water, which helps keep things moving smoothly. However, when we take in too much of certain substances such as salt, or if we are dehydrated, our body retains even more water, and the weight of this extra water is called water weight.

Water Weight and Weight Loss

Often when people talk about weight loss, they think it’s naturally fat loss. But actually, weight loss is very subjective. When you see the scales moving backward, it could be fat, muscle or water that you are losing.

Most of the time, the first couple of pounds that you lose is usually water weight. This is why in the first week you often lose a large amount of weight compared to the following weeks. When the water is gone, that’s usually when the body chooses between muscle and fat to burn, depending on how many calories you take in. If you take in too few calories, your body will burn muscle instead of fat since muscle provides more calories than fat.

That’s not to say that you will certainly lose water weight at first; if your diet is still high in sodium and alcohol and if you don’t replenish your body with water adequately, then your body will still cling on to your water weight.

How to Lose Water Weight

There are several things you can do if you want to lose that excess water weight. First of all, be sure to drink enough water – that is, more than eight glasses a day if you can manage it. Also, restrict the amount of salt, sugar, and alcohol that you take in on a daily basis. Do note that if you are a woman, it is possible that your body will hold on to up to five pounds of water weight when you are having your menses. So during this period, don’t stress out if you suddenly put on a lot of weight; just keep to your healthy diet, and when your menses are over the weight will slip off again.

Understanding what water weight is can hopefully keep you motivated if you find that your weight is fluctuating in between weighing sessions.

What I told a Buddy Looking to Lose Some Weight

One of my buddies at work is trying to get ready for baseball season and he is really not in very good shape right now. Last week he told me that he wanted to lose 20 pounds for baseball season and asked for some advice.

Obviously I have a page on that….

http://www.fitnesstipsforlife.com/how-to-lose-20-pounds-in-a-month.html

That goal is a bit tough for anyone. Doctors say you should only try to lose a pound or two a week but sometimes you get excited and quest for more.

But more importantly than having that grand goal we talked about a few other things. I believe that when you are making changes you want to be all in but you don’t want to hurt yourself or feel like you failed if you get hurt. Biggest Loser is a TV show not a lifestyle choice.

So this is what I told him, as well as that article.

1. Stretch lots – Stretching helps your flexibility and stops you from getting sore
2. Drink enough water to drown you – This will give you a lot of energy and when you sweat a lot you won’t feel sick from dehydration
3. Don’t sacrifice too much – If all you are eating is brocolli and chicken breasts and exercising 3 hours a day then after a few days you will give up. Instead make the right moves. East better, cut back on the junk and alcohol, and exercise a little bit every day

Remember the best road to real success is to make consistent and daily moves towards your goals.

What is Gerd or Acid Reflux disease

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Gerd), also known as acid reflux is a condition in which the acid in the stomach is forced up into the esophagus often causing great pain and discomfort. There are several potential causes for this condition including such things as an esophagus that contracts abnormally or a stomach that empties slower than normal. These conditions could be due to a damages stomach and could cause severe damage and burns to the esophagus lining.

Acid Reflux is more prominent and painful when lying down at night. The body is lying down leaving behind all the hard work for the acid of climbing up the esophagus. It can easily creep up and make sleeping nearly impossible.

There are several ways of avoiding the burn of acid reflux. The one that is the most permanent and works most effectively is a change in the way you eat and in fact the way you sleep. To stop or lessen the effects of acid reflux when sleeping you should try to keep your head somewhat elevated. This will make the job of climbing up the esophagus more difficult for the acid thanks to gravity.

Diet and Acid Reflux

In addition to altering your sleeping positions many find results by changing their diet. There are several food types that seem to aggravate reflux due to a reduction in pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter. These foods include most caffeine, peppermint in any form, many chocolates and alcohol of all types. In addition foods high in fat content should be avoided for reduction of acid reflux symptoms.

In addition to choosing the appropriate foods you should also change your eating schedule. If you are used to a large meal at the end of the day you might consider a smaller meal earlier in the evening. The reason for this is that your body has a chance to move the food from the stomach to be digested thereby eliminating it as a pressure to cause the reflux.

Learning the process of avoiding the burn of acid reflux might take a bit of time but will be well worth the effort. Taking stock in what you eat both at home and when you are out is a vital part of reducing symptoms of acid reflux.

For those suffering from this issue, the symptoms of acid reflux can be debilitating. Understanding how the foods you eat affect your body is the best way to conquer the pain of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.
