What do you want that has been held back?

Tonight we are watching the Biggest Loser and I am just thinking about some of the ways that we have been held back in the past and how we short change ourselves by not shooting for what we want because we just don’t think we can do it.

I do this myself, sometimes I set low expectations sometimes so that I won’t be disappointed. Trouble is that if you are going to work for something small you won’t go through with it. Instead you have to set huge giant expectations and goals for yourself so that you would be disappointed not to get them but excited to work through it.

Do You Know How Big Your Goals Are?

What do you want that has been held back?

Challenge Yourself To Success

When I am working with my kids on a homework project I see this in them often. Kids are crazy because they often think that they can do anything, my son in learning to program in Java and he is only 9 but when he has a school project that will take an hour he thinks it is just way to big. I have to laugh because in this case the project is easy and well defined and we can have easy steps, still there are tears and he thinks it is just too hard.

I was thinking about this yesterday because my daughter also had a project that went in fits and starts this weekend but in the end they both got their projects finished and both turned out better than I had originally expected.

Let Yourself Fail if Needed

So why don’t we do this for ourselves? Why do we set half ass plans and goals? I want a lot in a lot of areas in my life and sure I have been disappointed in the past and I am sure I will be in the future but if we don’t even take a shot at some big, giant goals and fail and allow ourselves to be disappointed then how do we even know what we are capable of?

One reason that I think we hold back sometimes is just to protect our own ego. Failure will make us feel less of ourselves, at least that is what we think, so we avoid failure at all costs in some parts of our lives. Really though our own bruised ego is a lot easier to handle when we are making big bets on ourselves and achieving things we didn’t think we could really do.

Not Perfection, Just the Next Step

Another problem is that we are worried that our plan may not be perfect. That is bad thinking. Really even the best plans that we can make will get derailed by things that are either our of our control or events that we did not foresee, Don’t worry about perfect plans just worry about the next step in the journey.

Zig Zigler, the greatest business coach and motivational expert probably in the last 50 years once said that a plane going from New York to Dallas on a windy day will go off course 5 minutes after it takes off because of that wind and then will correct it’s heading. 5 minutes later that plane will be off course again and will have to recorrect again. Eventually the plane will make it Dallas as expected but the course taken will be different than the one originally planned as it taxied down the runway in New York to take off.

I think this is another reason to have a gratitude journal, even any journal, just to see what we have failed at and succeeded at and allow ourselves to change course just a bit to see if we can reach higher and do better. We have to know that we have had past successes that we never really expected and failures that were “oh so close” to great victories in our lives

Changing How Gyms Work

A couple of weeks ago I signed up for a quick 14 days for 14 dollars deal at a local gym right near where I live. Actually I even wrote a post here about it. Although I do work out at my workplace in the company gym, I was trying this out so that I can have a gym close to my house.

I was excited and I have worked out there a few times including a killer spinning class that I did on Sunday. My membership has ended and although I would be interested in joining permanently but I am disappointed that there has been no follow through.

Problems with Gym Follow Up

Changing how gyms work

Initially I filled out a bit of a questionnaire and the girl that showed me around the gym tried to do a hard sell to get me to sign up right away but she did back down and let me go through my 14 day tryout of the gym.

The trouble is I never heard anything back. No Email, no phone calls, no way to close me on a membership. I simply came to the gym a few times and worked out and left. The staff was great and friendly but frankly they did not move me toward a decision to join the gym.

So what should have happened instead?

Well, as a person walking into the gym the staff there should have my motivation in mind. The questionaire tells them what I am looking to do and they should have been leading my along so that I could accomplish a few easy goals in my first two weeks. I can imagine that in the initial meeting when I did the questionaire they could have taken a snapshot of me and put me on a wall of fame. This wall of fame would include all new gym folk and would be great for everyone. It creates a sense of community, it helps the old timers recognize the newbies, and most importantly it gives the staff a chance to help out the new people in any way that they can.

I am very self reliant when it comes to being in a gym. I have belonged to a lot of gyms over the years and I have always seen this sense of community missing. I think that if a new person came to a gym and didn’t figure out things quickly enough they would never show up and over the years every February we have seen people do this. Just quit.

Stop Charging for Trainers!

One of the things that the gym was pushing me on initially was three sessions with a trainer for $250 or so. As a new person I think the gym should give some initial free trainer time to get the new people moving in the right direction.

Another thing the gym could have done is assigned a trainer to me that could see me for a few minutes before every workout, give me an idea of what to do so that I would make gains. They had my phone number and email so a trainer or a staff member could coordinate times and days and when I came in I would have some kind of workout plan.

I am not sure if it is fair but I always look at the guys that are selling you on gym memberships as being closers and not trainers. I think that these guys should be marketers too and help all those people with a spark of motivation and a half a plan to get to their goals. Not only would this raise the image of the gym but over a very short time these gyms could rely on referrals from their own members instead of the ads and hard sell they need to do today.

Are there any gym owners or managers out there that do this? What about you when joining a gym? What were your experiences?

Procrastination and Missed Opportunity

I and many others have a problems with procrastination. There are a few ways to win the battle of procrastination but one of the big one is to look at the loss of opportunity when it comes to procrastination.

How Procrastination Hurts Us

One of the problems with procrastination is that when we decide through inaction that we are not going to do something then we feel no sense of loss. Often we can find other busywork to stop us from doing important things and make that procrastination seem not quite as bad.

The real way that procrastination hurts us though is when we have some kind of important opportunity that we miss in life. I am not talking about missed opportunities like buying a winning lottery ticket or finding the love of your life but more commonplace types of opportunities to make change.

Here are some examples of missed opportunities thanks to procrastination

Eating badly or not exercising today – Means that you will not be in a better place physically 1 year from now than you are today
Watching TV today instead of going out and meeting new people – means that you will be STILL watching TV a year from now

I know these are a little harsh and don’t think that I don’t procrastinate either. Or else there would be 10,000 posts on this blog instead of just under 2,000. My procrastination is painful to me everyday. I have missed a lot of opportunities and successes in life because of procrastination and it can really hurt.

How To Kick Off Change Today

Procrastination and Missed Opportunity

Fight Procrastination

Look at the parts of your life where things are going badly for you or at least not as well as you wish they were. Now think back to what you could have done a year ago, the changes you could have made and how much better today would have been if you would have done those things.

Now look at yourself a year from now. If you make those changes today then one year ago you will be a much better place, no matter how good or bad things are today.

Change they say is inevitable. The problem is that we as people do not have to change if we do not want to. Look seriously at yourself today and make those changes. Mark 1 week from now, 1 month from now, 6 months from now, and 1 year from now on calendars and see what you want to be on those days. What action do you need to take today and then tomorrow to reach these goals?

Finally take steps that matter. I am sure I have written this lots of times before but if you have a list of 5 things to do today no matter what then you are one day closer to your goals. If you look back on the last few weeks how many of those days were wasted because you got to busy and did not do those really important little tasks that over time make giant changes.

Remember most huge success a year from now can be traced back to small changes that are made today. Let us all know what changes you are going to make and why.
