Biggest Loser Finale Season 14

Last night my family and I watched the finale of the Biggest Loser and it was fun to watch. I never find that I learn much from these finales but instead it is a celebration of how far the contestants have come in the 12 weeks of the show and the time at home. There was Danni crowned as the big winner by a single pound over Jeff and Gina was the at home winner and was within a pound or two of Danni as well.

It was great seeing the transformation of the people that were there this season. The kids of course are easy to recognize as changed as they get a bit older and I always believe that kids, even though they are still resistant to change will change anyway given the opportunity (more than us adults.

Biggest Loser Finale Season 14The kids sure looked great and they seemed to be so put together compared to most adults. Having a couple kids really makes me excited to see the opportunity that these three kids got even if it was probably way more public than they would have liked.

People like Gina and Pam had a real angry streak going in and once they let go they were not nearly as aggressively defensive as they were before. Joe seemed like the classic big cocky dude at the beginning but was much better at the end and Francelina still had giant hair in the finale.

In fact all the Biggest Losers changed – for the better.

The thing that changed this time and always seems to change is that the contestants start out having had to defend their lifestyle and abilities and choices. By the end of the season they see that these things don’t matter, they don’t have to define themselves in a small little box and instead can decide at anytime that they will change in any way.

Biggest Loser Finale Season 14

How do you feel about that? It makes me cringe personally. Makes me realize how low we all set the bar in life.

We all tend to like to see the lowly Biggest Loser people at the start suffering because we know that they will be victorious in the end and they will change in many ways. The trouble is that sometimes we rely on living their change vicariously through the TV instead of making these changes in ourselves.

So last night Danni won, and when she only beat Joe by 1 pound I was still shaking my head that their are no losers in that group at all. Everyone that came out this season fought through the pain, the eating, the diet changes, and came out the other side as real winners.

This still makes me really excited about this show. There are lots of things behind the scenes that I am sure that we don’t get to see and the fact that people are losing 100 pounds or more in just a few weeks is crazy enough only to be shown on TV and not terribly realistic but that is OK to see.

What I really loved again this season was seeing all of the changes and the inspiration that all of us can make changes at any time in our lives even though we tend not to do what we should.

How much water to drink

How much water to drink

How much water to drink

How much water to drink? Water is your most important nutrient. Everyone knows that the majority of our body is water. The single most important nutrient in your diet is water. Here are some facts. babies are 70% water, adults are 50-60% water and in breaking your body down, Blood is made up of 83 percent water, bones are 22 percent water, and muscle is 75 percent water. So water is really important. As you exercise and gain weight with muscle you can see that muscle is mostly water.

Most people do not drink much water if any at all. In fact both Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig both have their customers drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water a day and most people find that they lose 2-10 pounds in the first week on their diet, primarily from the water loss.

How much water to drink

Hydration is a very interesting thing. If you do not drink enough water your body seems to retain it to protect itself, once you start to drink a LOT of water you will find that for the first few days you will be running to the bathroom every hour but your body quickly adapts and you regulate quite well.

When drinking your water you will also find that your concentration gets better and you are more attentive. I have also found a very interesting attitude amongst others around me, when they see you increasing the water in your diet they will in a very condescending tone tell you that yes in fact drinking water is good for you. You are going to see this with many of the new habits that you pick up that people will seem to know these things and sometimes feel guilty to see someone else follow through on them.

One thing you will really find after you discover how much water to drink  is that your energy and concentration will improve by a significant amount as you drink more water on a daily basis.

Finally just one thing that I have found is that I kick start my day by drinking about 3 glasses of my water first thing before I get on my bike to start my day. I think that how much water to drink is up to you and that more is usually better.

What is Lapband Surgery

Lets start this post on what is lapband surgery by just letting me say that I hate the idea of surgery to fix overweight problems unless all diet and exercise options have been exhausted.

This is my second article on Lapband surgery as I wrote another lap band surgery article last year that talked about it as well

Looking at other diet and exercise options is critical as our bodies will always seem to find a way around the invasive ways that we try to change things.  People overeat after gastric bypass as we have seen lots of times on The Biggest Loser, hormone production decreases when we take steroids or HGH. But lapband surgery is becoming more popular and in a recent trip to LA I saw a lot of billboards so here is the FDA info on it.

What is Lapband Surgery

Lapband surgery

Lapband Surgery Basics

What is it? The Lapband surgery is a surgically implanted device that helps adults, who are at least 18 years old, eat less and lose weight. The Lap Band surgery consists of a silicone band, tubing, and an access port. The inner surface of the silicone band is inflatable and is connected by the tubing to the access port.

How does it work? The band is placed around the upper part of the stomach during a surgical procedure. The band is connected to an access port that is placed close to the skin. Later, the surgeon can adjust the band (adding or removing fluid) by piercing the access port through the skin with a needle. The band creates a small stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of food. The narrowed opening between the stomach pouch and the rest of the stomach controls how fast food passes from the pouch to the lower part of the stomach. Inflating the band (adding saline) makes the opening smaller, causing food to pass slower. Deflating the band (removing saline) makes the opening larger, permitting food to pass faster. The band limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and increases the time it takes for food to be digested, helping people to eat less.

When is it used? The Lapband surgery  is used for weight loss in obese adults who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-40, with one or more obesity-related medical conditions (such as Type II diabetes and hypertension), and when non-surgical weight loss methods (such as supervised diet, exercise, and behavior modification) have not been successful. Patients must be willing to make major changes in their eating habits and lifestyle.

What will it accomplish? The Lapband surgery will help patients lose weight and maintain the weight loss, and it may help improve their health. In a U.S. study of patients with a BMI between 30-40, 80% of patients lost at least 30% of their excess weight and kept it off for one year. There were some patients who lost no weight and others who lost over 80% of their excess weight. The quality of life for patients enrolled in the study improved significantly.

When should it not be used? It should not be used for someone who is a poor candidate for surgery, has certain stomach or intestinal disorders, has to take aspirin frequently, or is addicted to alcohol or drugs. It should not be used if someone is not able or willing to follow dietary and other recommendations.

Is Lapband Surgery Safe?

A 2007 study published in the American Journal of Surgery found up to 76 percent of Lap-Band patients developed complications over three years. In some cases, excessive vomiting caused stomach acid to erode the band. Last year, Allergan, the largest U.S. manufacturer of gastric bands recalled 152,000 defective bands.

Whether you are at a point where lapband is an option or not is up to you and a doctor. Let me caution you again though that it is important to look at any lapband surgery or gastric bypass as just an option after you have exhausted any diet and exercise options.
