Calendar Love

I’m more likely to complete a task when it’s in writing and I give myself the opportunity to check it off. What is it about calendars? Back when I did 14 weeks of Insanity, I felt like I had to do it because there was a calendar with a task and I needed to check it off. It adds pressure and makes me feel like I’m skipping out on myself when I miss an appointment.

My mid-September calendar has been so helpful this week. Granted, it’s only been a couple of days of check-offs, but it’s working in it’s own way. For example, I didn’t finish my Jillian workout until about 8pm last night. I was busy most of the day and really just wanted to settle in for the evening. But, the calendar hanging on the refrigerator was calling to me.  I could not end the day without checking exercise off my list. I’m restarting c25k again today and I’m excited because the weather is perfect. I’m restarting because 1) I want to participate in the 5k in Winston-Salem in December again and 2) I think I’ve been invited to do a 5k in Cincinnati in May. It’s time to prepare!

How do you stay accountable for exercise?

No Factory Food Week

I want to try an experiment next week, and I’d love to have you guys join along. It’s not going to be easy, but I’m excited. I noticed this week that a lot of the foods I have trouble with overeating are what I would call factory foods. Food that was manufactured or processed in a factory. This includes commercials meats.

A lot of the foods I eat on a daily basis have been processed some way or another: bread (sandwich thins), pickles, cheeses (that aren’t local/raw), frozen meals (even ones I consider to be healthy), condiments, snack foods etc.

This means that for one week (starting monday and ending the following Sunday) I’m only going to consume foods that are in their natural state. No fast food or eating out. Meat, dairy, and bread products will be purchased and made locally. That leaves produce, nuts and beans as my other main sources of nutrition. In short: if it has commercial packaging, marketing, tons of ingredients it’s off the list.

Time to get my menu and list ready for the farmer’s market tomorrow.

Leave a comment if you’d like to join in!

Listen, Read, Eat

ListeningThis album has been my work sound track since it’s recent release. Nice job Bon, nice job. My favorite song is Minnesota. WI.

Reading: Over vacation I read Delirium by Lauren Oliver and cannot recommend it enough if you liked The Hunger Games. Not that they are similar, but in that “the world is messed up, young love” sort of way. Oh, please read it so I can talk about it with someone. And now I’m re-reading The Great Gatsby, it just feels like the right thing to do.

Eating: I’m working on creating new go-to meals that are low in calories, filling, real food, flavorful and ethnic inspired. Case in point: today’s lunch was under 200 calories, 198 to be exact. Bonus: the cucumbers were from our garden.

1/3 chicken breast cooked in a touch of olive oil and jerk seasoning. yogurt sauce made with whole plan yogurt, dill, garlic and seas salt. fresh cucumbers. 1/2 C garlic and olive oil couscous.
