Bill Clinton the Vegan?

I had no idea but just read an article about Bill Clinton and how he switched to a vegan lifestyle.

bill-clintonI am not sure how much you have noticed or if it is just the people and blogs and facebook people I see but it seems like being a vegan is not nearly as crazy as it used to seem.

I remember as a kid people would be vegetarians, mainly just not eating meat or fish, and I used to think of it as unhealthy and very fringe lifestyle. But now, veganism abounds. We have a vegan cookbook at home and the foods, although a little strange, seem to be really good.

Not sure if I am ready to go vegan anytime soon but the whole idea of eating a cleaner diet is very tempting. I still have a lot of room to move in my diet right now. I take in a bit too much fat, I eat some processed foods every single day, I drink coffee, and I have a bit of a sweet tooth.

I really believe that people that are eating a vegan meal plan are on the right track as far as getting healthy goes. There are a lot of problems with North American cattle and chicken farming and the unhealthy additives, steroids, and unclean conditions of having so many animals in a cramped area to bring down fast food prices.

On the other hand I do still have a lot of problem with giving up chicken burgers, steaks, and hamburgers.

I guess just trying a few vegan dishes and cleaning up my diet is the best bet for me right now.

Desserts for Diabetics

Desserts for Diabetics are hard to find because desserts are often sweet and high in sugar, and for this reason diabetics tend to avoid them to prevent their blood glucose levels from skyrocketing. But just because you are diabetic does not mean you can no longer treat yourself to dessert after dinner. Although you have to pay attention to your sugar intake, the American Diabetes Association says that it is safe to eat any food as long as you limit your portions and factor that food in your daily allowance of carbohydrates and calories.

Desserts for Diabetics – Plan Ahead

A diabetic diet plan typically limits carbohydrate intake. Diabetics who want to eat dessert must include the dessert in their overall carb intake for the meal. To keep within the recommended allowance, substitute the dessert for another carbohydrate-containing food. By eliminating bread, potatoes or pasta, you can have a serving of your favorite dessert instead. Don’t forget to keep track of the total number of calories, too.

Desserts for Diabetics – Fresh Fruits for Dessert

Desserts for Diabetics

Fresh fruits are some of the best desserts for diabetics. Fruits are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. They can help satisfy your sweet tooth without wreaking havoc on your blood glucose levels.

Sugar-Free Desserts for Diabetics

Sugar substitutes can be used for baking desserts for diabetics. The most popular sugar substitutes are sucralose and acesulfame. A non-nutritive sweetener or sugar replacement can be used to bake your favorite cakes and cookies at home. You can also continue to use regular sugar, but reduce the amount by up to one-third or one-half.

Foods and drinks with very few calories are considered free foods and you can have them for dessert. These foods include sugar-free gelatin snacks and ice pops. Prepare a delicious dessert by adding fresh diced fruits to a low-calorie gelatin mix.

Suggestions for Desserts for Diabetics

Diabetics also want to eat dessert now and then. By limiting your portions, it’s possible for you to enjoy cakes, cookies, and ice cream. You can also eat low-carbohydrate desserts such as fruit salads or ice pops made from frozen fruit juice.

If you do your own baking, try reducing the amount of sugar in the recipe by up to one-half. Once you get used to limiting the amount of sugar in your desserts, you may find regular desserts too sweet for your taste.

You can prevent your blood sugar from spiking by eating dessert as part of your meal. Just keep in mind that diabetics should keep an eye on their total calorie intake. When choosing desserts for diabetics, opt for low-calorie foods that are high in nutrients in order to maintain a healthy weight.

Yogurt Brownie Sunday

My sweet tooth knows no bounds. As soon as I declare “self, let’s get serious about this whole weight loss business” I start craving sweets. Seeing as how this is the year without refined sugar with a couple exceptions (I’m looking at you Beaches Resort) I’ve had to get a little creative.

And here friends, is a Sunday, just as good as any old ice cream thing you’d find elsewhere. The star is, of course, the brownie. But how?

Meet The Pure Bar (organic, raw, refined sugar free). The main contenders are dates, agave nectar, cashews, cocoa, almonds and a proud “and that’s all!” at the end. I love them and buy them so often that our local grocery store has a hard time meeting my demand.

To me, the taste is very similar to a Little Debbie brownie. My husband would disagree and actually does not understand my love for these bars.

You guys remember the rumor about Lara Bar cherry and pecan pie bars tasting just like the real thing and we all went to the store and some of us (no names mentioned) bought a box on Amazon hoping that somehow someone finally figured out how to make dates and nuts taste like buttery crust and gooey filling? And then, well, it tasted more like fruit and nuts than gooey pies and we all cried? No?

This bar is so good, if you’re not my husband, go buy some and thank me later. Word on the street is that Trader Joe’s has them, Amazon has them and my local Food Lion stocks them just for me (I think).

All you need is 1/2 C whole plain yogurt, one Pure Bar Chocolate Brownie, 1 T all-fruit jam (melted or stirred in with the yogurt) and 1 T shredded coconut (optional).
