I’m Going to the Beach

Happy June. I love June! June is the first official month of summer. It contains lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, our two year anniversary, a trip to the beach, lots of regular Friday evenings at the Artisan Market, trips to the farmer’s market and more time spent outside.

I put my Wear it Well Spring course on hold and have thought seriously about just doing a version live on the blog. It’s less pressure and time consuming that way.

And then I thought it might be fun to do a “getting ready for the beach” two week series on the blog. I’m not talking about getting bikini ready (I just made myself laugh, you?), but just prepped in the best possible ways. Picking out a swimsuit for your body-type, staying hydrated, packing, feet and nails, flying, beach attire…you get the point.

Even if you don’t have a trip to the beach planned I think it could be fun for everyone to get summer-fied?

Simple Walking Tips

Everyone would like to get some exercise and I have walking Tips to help you out. Who of us won’t love to have all of that stubborn fat melt away quickly and easily? But if only it could happen. The fact remains that while you can burn sugar and calories really fast, the same cannot be said of fat, even though it is formed from calories and sugar.

Simple Walking Tips

Simple Walking Tips

That said, there are still simple ways to burn fat and lose weight, and when I mean ‘simple’, I obviously don’t refer either to starving for several days on end or doing long boring cardios for hours. Believe it or not, if you are prepared to walk everyday, you cannot but get rid of fat.

Many would argue that it would take several years for an overweight person to lose fat solely with the help of walking, in sharp contrast to intense workouts such as interval training. That might be true, but then again, how many of us have the stamina to bear the strain of intense workouts. The answer is, very few.

Walking Tips to Use Today

If you have never worked out in life, it is silly to even imagine that you would be able to manage those hard workouts with ease. On the contrary, walking is easy to do and it is not true that you cannot burn fat with it. You just need to be steady and patient and never lose heart. Here are a few walking tips for you to help you gain the maximum mileage from this exercise.

1. It is very important that you wear the correct shoes while walking, or you would be in danger of injuring your feet badly. I would recommend a pair of decent tennis shoes for this purpose, and you can buy them from your local store at an affordable price. With tennis shoes, the sole of your foot rests comfortably, thereby making walking easier for you with no fear of injuries

2. We often set fixed schedules for almost all the important activities of our life except that of looking after our health. This is a rather strange behavior as a one’s health comes before even his most important activity. It is easy for you to forget about your daily walking routine if you don’t schedule it like your other important tasks. Make walking your top priority, because it really IS

3. To burn even more fat from this exercise, you can carry one pound of weight in each of your hands. While walking, you can raise your arms over your head and then gently let them fall on the side. As you repeat this exercise while walking, it would make your heart beat faster and consequently you would be burning more fat

If you wish to carry the weight in your legs instead of hands, you can buy leg weights instead. They are available for varying amounts of weights, and are quite cheap too. You can get them for as low as $5 or $6, depending on the amount of weight you are buying

4. If you feel a bit impatient, you can add half-an-hour of extra intense workout along with your regular walking schedule
. The reason I left this tip for the last is that you should do it only when you are fully comfortable with walking. This can tremendously accelerate the weight loss process for you and you would be able to get rid of those annoying pounds quicker than you would with just plain walking.

Walking Tips – Apply Them Today

So my advice to you is to get started today. There is not better time to get started walking then this very day. Let me know how much these walking tips are helping you out.

Do it Anyway

This poem by Mother Teresa has been on my mind lately…

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

I read this a few weeks ago and thought it was profound. It’s not directly related to weight loss, but I think we all worry too much about what other people think. We know people who will dissect every word and every action- do them anyway. I love that. Do it anyway. Take care of yourself regardless of what anyone may think. Find your own path.

Yesterday was another good day of food and exercise. I feel good that I’m building a little army of good days behind me. They will stand behind me on the days when I want to eat my weight in pizza. I will say that I’m glad I started this post PMS. It’s not a particularly unstressful time either, it’s just less of a struggle.

I realized this week that the hardest thing about eating less and counting calories is me. I had to get over my stubbornness, my unwillingness to admit that I needed to do this to lose weight. I had to arrive, yet again, to this conclusion on my own.

I’m eating anywhere from 1,200-1,700 calories a day and I’m not hungry- I thought I would be. I’m not deprived. I’m not unsatisfied. I’m not just eating salads and carrots-I’m eating what I truly want to eat. I’m full on less. And I think it’s important for me to remember this. That I can get by on less and I’ll be better for it.

Last night I really wanted to eat out. Even after having lunch out with a friend. I tried to use the excuse of chicken still being frozen. I kept going back and forth mentally and I knew, deep down, that if I ate out again I would go over my calories for the day. It’s so much easier to eat more quality food at home with less calories. When I’m in a restaurant I often find it too hard to stop eating the giant portions put in front of me.

And now on to yesterday’s food:

Quiche again. I ate about half of what you see here. And 6 oz. or so of orange juice. 363 Calories

Lamb burger from Natasha’s here in Floyd. So good! It felt pretty light to me, and was of course, very flavorful. I ate all of the burger and about half of the crisps. 650 calories

Chicken on mixed greens with cucumber, feta, bacon and vinaigrette dressing. About 400 calories.

Not pictured:

1 serving cashews- 160 calories

Glucosamine chews- 70 calories

Total calories: 1,643

Exercise: 45 minutes of Insanity Workout (400-500 calories)
