Ginger for Recovery from Kidney Disease

Having a daughter that suffers from Kidney disease means that I have done a lot of research into the causes and effects of different alternative therapies for Kidney disease. Sadly, for us this is not an issue as Taylor has inherited a bad gene from both my wife and I so most therapies would not work. I have however found a lot of research showing that Ginger may be a great as a treatment for people suffering from some kinds of kidney disease as well as people with injuries to their kidneys.

Studies Using Ginger to Treat Kidney Problems

Ginger for Recovery from Kidney DiseaseExperimental evidence exists for potential benefit of ginger on kidney function. A study in “Renal Failure” in April 2004 examined whether ginger could preserve kidney function following ischemia. Using an animal model, researchers clamped off the blood flow to the kidneys and then provided ginger as a dietary supplement to the rats. The investigators demonstrated that dietary supplementation with ginger offered significant renal protection by activating antioxidant pathways.

Investigators using animal models have also demonstrated ginger to provide protection from toxin-mediated kidney damage as can occur with chemotherapy or alcohol-induced damage. A series of studies published in the journal “Food and Chemical Toxicology” examined the impact of the chemotherapy agents doxorubicin and cisplatin on renal function.

Ginger administration prevented the acute kidney injury caused by the chemotherapy agents. After analysis of the kidneys, the authors concluded that the antioxidant properties of ginger contributed to the observed protection.

Another study published in the “Indian Journal of Experimental Biology” in 2010 demonstrated a similar benefit of ginger on kidney function following alcohol-induced injury. Again, the authors found the antioxidant effects of ginger to be the primary mechanism of protection.

How to Use Ginger for Chronic Kidney Disease

I feel the need to stress that this is not any kind of mainstream treatment for Kidney Disease and of course your Neph0rologist will probably laugh at you for trying this, but why not? I have found the following video which starts 42 seconds in to show how to do the treatment and although it is only kind of in English it is easy enough to follow

Ginger has been used effectively for gastrointestinal problems as major as colitis and as minor as motion sickness. It stimulates good digestion. It helps alleviate congestion and minimizes mucous, even helping asthmatics. Various ginger extracts have been shown to improve cardiovascular health and circulation.

I have not used Ginger myself as a therapy but I can tell you that in researching this info on the links between ginger and kidney disease I have found a lot of different stories and research that seem to show that ginger is a great way to keep yourself, or get yourself healthy

What are the Guidelines for Dietary Fats?

We are always told to cut back on our dietary fats but there seems to be a problem with the research, It doesn’t seem to support this.

Over at Medpage Today there is an article that is a study or studies. It seems that out of 27 randomized controlled trials (That means the researchers were checking results but were isolated from individual patient info) there seemed to be no firm direction dietary guidelines that encourage high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of saturated fats are not clearly supported by research.

According to the researcher of this, Rajiv Chowdhury of the University of Cambridge said:

“The pattern of this analysis did not yield clearly supportive evidence for current cardiovascular guidelines that encourage high consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and low consumption of saturated fats,” concluded Chowdhury and his co-authors. What’s more, they said, “Nutritional guidelines on fatty acids and cardiovascular guidelines may require reappraisal to reflect the current evidence.”

The info at the MedPage article is really interesting although very dense with info but lots of the info we think is right like “Eat real food”, or the idea of using fad diets that aren’t very easy to follow forever seems to be correct.

Is HealthBook Apples First Fitness Tracker?

I have had an iPhone and an iPad for three years or so and just like any other fitness person I have used my iphone for tracking speed and mileage for walking and running. I used the Runkeeper app a lot last Summer in getting ready for the Kidney March.

Well there was a leak today to the website 9to5mac that seems to show that Apple is looking to take over that tracking market that is so very popular.

So What is Healthbook?

As detailed in the images throughout this article, which are complete recreations of screenshots, Healthbook’s user interface is largely inspired by the iPhone’s existing Passbook application. Versions of Healthbook in testing are capable of tracking several different health and fitness data points.

Each category of functionality is a card in the Healthbook. Cards are distinguished by a color, and the tabs can be arranged to fit user preferences. As can be seen in the above images, Healthbook has sections that can track data pertaining to bloodwork, heart rate, hydration, blood pressure, physical activity, nutrition, blood sugar, sleep, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and weight.

Is HealthBook Apples First Fitness Tracker? So if this is in fact true we may see some releases rollout or even a whole suite that is rumored to include things Oxygen Saturation, blood glucose, hydration and even sleep tracking.

There is one thing that makes this difficult to do though and that is the probes or measuring devices. We will have to see if there is going to be any extra addons like Nike used to have when you would need to by the little tag to put on your shoe to track mileage. This kind of plays right into the idea of the Apple Watch though so there may need to be a few announcements coming.

Would this be a “must Buy” item for you? Would you like to have all your health and related info on your phone? Some people worry about privacy, I would instead worry more about accuracy.
