Health Risks of Childhood Obesity

There is a lot of concern over the growing rate of childhood obesity today.  In the United States, at least one child in every five is overweight or obese.  Genetic factors play a role but the primary causes of obesity are consumption of high-calorie foods and inadequate physical activity.

Due to the rising rate of obesity, weight-related diseases are becoming common among children and adolescents.  There are many health risks of childhood obesity, including the following.

Health Risks of Childhood Obesity

Type 2 DiabetesType 2 diabetes is a chronic disease linked to childhood obesity.  An increasing number of overweight children and teenagers suffer from this medical condition.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three children in the United States will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

High Blood PressureChildren who are obese or overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, which can lead to other health risks such as heart disease.

Cardiovascular Disease – Overweight children often suffer from high cholesterol levels as well as high blood pressure.  These two medical conditions are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.  Hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis is linked to high cholesterol levels in the blood, and is the most common cause of heart disease.  It can begin as early as childhood in overweight children.

Breathing Problems – Other health risks associated with child obesity are asthma and sleep apnea.  A large number of overweight children suffer from asthma.  Obese children can also have trouble sleeping as a result of obstructive sleep apnea.  This is a serious breathing disorder wherein the sufferer’s breathing is briefly interrupted during sleep.  If left untreated, apnea can lead to heart failure.

Gallstones and Liver Problems – Children and teenagers who are obese are likely to have gallstones.  Obese children are also at risk of fatty liver disease and liver problems that could lead to cirrhosis.

Orthopedic and Other Complications – Excessive weight bearing down on the body can cause orthopedic and joint problems.  Obese children suffer more often from fractures, muscle problems, arthritis, joint pain and bone deformities.

Metabolic Syndrome – It is estimated that 25% to 40% of overweight children will develop metabolic syndrome that could lead to diabetes and heart ailments.  Metabolic syndrome linked to weight problems include high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and abnormal lipid levels.

Future Health Risks – Child obesity carries health risks not only in the present but also in the future.  Children and teenagers who are overweight or obese are more likely to become obese adults.  Obesity in adults has a direct negative impact on their health and well-being.  In addition to increased cardiovascular risk, adults who are obese are more likely to suffer from diabetes and to develop certain forms of cancer.

What You Can Do Now

Childhood obesity is a serious health problem that should be dealt with as early as possible.  There are treatment options for obese children, such as diet and gastric bypass, but health professional believe that prevention is the best way to combat childhood obesity.  Parents should provide a balanced and healthy diet for their children.  They should also set a good example by leading a healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious foods, and encouraging their children to participate in regular physical activities.

Reasons Behind Teenage Weight Gain

Teenage obesity and teenage weight gain is harder to control than childhood obesity. This is because children are more receptive to advice and suggestions than teens. Also, you cannot chide a teenager in the same way as a pre-teen. As we grow into adolescence, we grow physically as well as mentally. We become much more sensitive and stubborn than before. With teenage weight gain we think of ourselves as more intelligent than our parents. As you can see, handling a teenage kid is a real pain in the butt.

Now, why teenage weight gain?

Reasons Behind Teenage Weight Gain

Teenage Weight Gain

1) They hardly know the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods since they were taught about it during their childhood. If they were eating junk and fatty foods as little kids, the same unhealthy eating habit follows them into their adolescence and they start eating them in larger quantities.

Parents often ask their kids to buy junk foods from outside instead of taking the time or trouble to cook healthy meals at home, this itself can lead to teenage weight gain. If your child never tastes healthy and organic foods, he would naturally hate them in the latter years of his life.

Plus, if your child lives in a school, things could get only worse. These days, schools prefer to buy junk foods from outside since it is the cheaper option to cooking meals in-house. Also, the exercise classes they have are pretty basic. They would only work for a certain period, after which your kid would be left on his own.

There is just no way your teen kid can have a choice to eat healthy foods

2) They are much more tempted to try out restaurant foods than their pre-teen counterparts. You see, almost all teenagers today have their pockets full of cash. There are usually two sources of this cash: either their parents offer them pocket money or they make money by dong part time jobs. So, when they have money to spend, they usually spend it on junk foods because they are tasty and yummy. This will lead to teenage weight gain

A lot of their food habits are also influenced by their peers at school and college. I still remember how every time my friend had soft drinks at the college Restaurant, I would inevitably buy one for myself, even though I had no intention of buying it when I ventured out of home.

3) They hardly exercise. Again, their parents have got a big role to play here. If a kid is not taught the benefits of exercises, or if parents allow them to watch video games for hours instead of encouraging them to participate in outdoor sports, there is a good chance of teenage weight gain, the situation could only get worse as they grow into adolescence.

There are indeed very few schools which make outdoors sports and other such activities a mandatory part of their curriculum. As such, our present school system is also to be blamed for teenage weight gain.

Can we really blame schools for teenage weight gain?

It would have been good if the present American lifestyle and education system could be completely revolutionized; however, I don’t see it happening within the next few years. Hence, as a parent, it is high time that you start taking control of your kid’s health. As to what you should do to keep your teenage kid healthy, I think that what I said above is more than enough to healp avoid teenage weight gain.

Dean Karnazes Running Across America

Dean Karnazes Running Across America

Dean Karnazes Run Across America

This is one of those inspiring crazy stories about just how hard people can work. Dean Karnazes is an ultramarathoner, you know the guys that run up to 100 miles in one day. Anyway Dan is going to run across America in 75 days from Los Angeles to New York. The run is sponsored by the Regis and Kelly morning show but the real work is being done by Dean Karnazes.

Run Across America

This endeavour is amazing and the fact is that dean is running not just for the achievement but also for a couple of charities and the bringing of these charities into the public eye, specifically childhood obesity. As a father of two you can imagine how great and important that I think that this issue is.

Dean will be running for 12-14 hours a day, sleeping 5-6 hours a day and running 40-50 miles a day. I could not do this once let alone do it for 75 days.

Lets all cheer on Dean Karnazes and help in any way we can for this great run!

You can follow his progress on the Live with Regis and Kelly site
